Freddie Vazquez and Bachelor 4 Blaze to Second Out of 126 in the 1.40m

Wellington, FL – March 25, 2015 - Messenger Hill Farm, trainers Freddie and Jodi Vazquez and their clients are continuing their successful season at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). During WEF Week 10 Freddie Vazquez and his stallion Zippo Z came earned fifth place the $127,000 Horseware Ireland Grand Prix CSI 3*. This past week, Vazquez and Bachelor 4 owned by Messenger Hill Farm, came in second place out of 126 in the 1.40m Speed Challenge Sponsored by Spy Coast Farm.

Vazquez easily piloted the large-strided Rheinlander gelding around Alan Wade’s track, selecting the inside turns that would work perfectly for the pair and leaving out strides where it made sense. For a speed round it looked exceedingly smooth, Vazquez’s trademark ride.

“I got him about a year ago from Desiree Johnson and Johnson Horses in Germany,” said Vazquez. “She also found Zippo for me, as well. She finds me a lot of horses. When I first got him he was quite strong. I had to figure out what I wanted to do to put it together with him.”

Last year, Vazquez showed Bachelor a few times at WEF with some success. Then he had the rest of the summer off. He started really getting strong last fall before returning to Florida for the circuit.

“When we got down here he was quite fresh,” Vazquez said. “It took us a little bit to kind of get him back mentally. I brought him back and took my time doing the 1.25m, 1.30m, 1.35m and eventually the 1.40m. He is quite a careful horse. He jumps 90 percent of his rounds clear. He's jumped I think almost every round clear down here but like three maybe. He's very careful but at the same time he's very fast. He can be quite hard to catch when he lays down a good round. So I've been very happy.”

Vazquez commented on the number of entries in the class “We're not lacking participation at WEF,” he joked. “Week 11, and almost 130 horses in the 1.40m. The course walk looked like you were going to walk the Maclay!”

Vazquez will compete Bachelor 4 in the 1.40m again this week. He hopes to be selected to represent Puerto Rico in the Pan-American Games in July with Zippo Z.
