Caristo, Robertshaw, Roy and Teall Named Judges for The Derby at Genesee Country Village & Museum

Written by: Emily Riden
Client: The Derby at The Genesee Country Village & Museum
Release Date: 2015-04-16

Wellington, FL – April 16, 2015 –The 2015 Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum will be presided over by a renowned panel of judges including Ralph Caristo, Danny Robertshaw, Randy Roy and Geoff Teall.

Caristo, Robertshaw, Roy and Teall will serve as judges for the $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby and the $5,000 Pony Hunter Derby held June 6 – 7, 2015 in Mumford, New York.

The Derby is one of only three stand-alone USHJA Hunter Derby events in the country, attracting some of the nations top contenders to compete on the beautiful, grass field of the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

For Teall, The Derby represents a trip home to New York’s Genesee Hunt country where he grew up riding and foxhunting for many years prior to launching his extremely successful training career.

Since then, Teall has trained horses to hunter championships at such shows as Capital Challenge, the Devon Horse Show, the Hampton Classic, the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show, the Winter Equestrian Festival and more. He has judged at major horse shows across the country, including the National Horse Show, USEF Pony Finals, the Washington International Horse Show and the Winter Equestrian Festival, and he authored the book Geoff Tealle on Riding Hunters, Jumpers and Equitation: Develop a Winning Style.

As an active voice in the equestrian community and in the governance of the sport, Teall serves on the Board of Directors of the USHJA, as the co-founder of the American Hunter Jumper Foundation and as the chair or a member of numerous other committees, including but not limited to the USHJA judge’s committee, the USHJA trainer’s certification committee and the USHJA’s official’s education committee.

Like Teall, Caristo has trained horses to top accolades across the United States, including six USHJA and USEF Horse of the Year winners, and he has judged at nearly every major horse show in the country. For more than 15 years, Caristo has also served as the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) Zone 2 chef d’equipe, coaching young riders from Zone 2 to more than a dozen team or individual NAJYRC gold medals. The Caristo Cup is now awarded annually to an NAJYRC chef d’equipe who possess the same sportsmanship, horsemanship and enthusiasm for the sport as Caristo.

For more than three decades, Robertshaw has seen success as a rider, trainer, clinician or judge. As a rider, Robertshaw was named The Chronicle of the Horse Show Hunter Horseman of the Year after becoming the first rider to earn Regular Working Hunter championships at Devon, the Pennsylvania National, the Washington International, the National Horse Show and the Royal Winter Fair all in the same year.  Robertshaw has trained more than 30 champions at Devon and indoors, and in 2001, he was recognized with the Emerson Burr Trophy and as a USEF Equestrian of Honor.

As a judge, Robertshaw has officiated at the most prestigious competitions in the country, including Devon, Washington International, Madison Square Garden and the Maclay Finals, and he was on the judging panel of the USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals for both 2009 and 2010. Robertshaw is also a committed volunteer for the sport, and in 2008, the USHJA honored his commitment with a President’s Distinguished Service Award.

Roy is an FEI level judge and the only Canadian to have officiated all four of North America’s prestigious indoor shows: Harrisburg, Washington, the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden and the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. An accomplished rider, trainer, judge and course designer, Roy has also authored eight books including “Viewpoint,” “Judge’s Pet Peeves,” “You be the Judge,” “The Judge is Back,” “Striding to the Top,” “Made in Canada,” “Horse Time Show Time” and “Here Comes the Judge.”
