Messenger Hill Farmís Kira Telford Cleans Up at Showplace Spring Warm Up

Despite Snow and Rain the Messenger Hill Farm Team is in Top Form in Chicago

Mettawa, IL – April 30, 2015 – Kira Telford, from Chicago, has been riding and training with Freddie and Jodi Vazquez of Messenger Hill Farm since she was 7. Recently accepted to the University of Miami for the fall to study biology, she spends her free time focused on what she loves most, horses and competing in the hunters and equitation.

Telford showed every week during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida, earning some wonderful results and prizes. But trainer, Jodi Vazquez was really proud of the confidence she showed last week despite the cold and wet weather at their first show back at home at Showplace Production’s Spring Warm Up at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois.

“She came here and just owned it,” said Jodi Vazquez. “Every trip she had just blew you out of the water. I think the key is consistency. She has worked really hard, and you can see that she just shines.”

Telford humbly describes herself as uncoordinated and says that it takes her a little bit longer than some people to reach her riding goals. That couldn’t have been less evident at Spring Warm Up last week. Telford was on her game and earned the championship of the Junior Hunter 3’3”/3’ 6” Division with her own Calistoga Gold and won the WIHS overall with her new mount, Larry, owned by Arly Golombek. Telford also won a Junior Hunter 3’3”/ 3’ 6” class and was second in the handy class with her hunter, Friday Night and had great rounds and top prizes with CR Moet.

“Kira just loves the sport and loves to ride,” said Jodi Vazquez. “Obviously everyone wants to win, but everyday she works harder and is always in a good mood. Her perception of success is really about enjoying the sport and enjoying the horses. It was 39 degrees and raining, and she said, ‘Oh it’s ok; we will be fine!’ That is her attitude all the time.”

Telford traveled back and forth to Wellington to show with the Vazquezes from Chicago during the winter season and benefited from the opportunity to ride at home with Messenger Hill Farm’s assistant trainer Laura Trepte and try some other horses during the winter.

“It was really nice to be able to ride outside,” said Telford about the expanded outdoor arena at Messenger Hill Farm. “Now the ring is twice as big as Lamplight’s main hunter ring, so it was really nice to be able to go out there and school my horses, especially with my small junior hunter who loves to just canter around a huge ring. It has been nice to come home.”

In addition to Telford’s great performances, the Messenger Hill team was in great form. Chloe Watrous of Evanston, Illinois and Highland’s Bridget Jones, owned by Born Free Farm earned the Children’s Hunter Pony tricolors, taking the blues in three classes of the division. Chloe Jihn, from Lake Forest, Illinois and Primrose, owned by Alexa Aureliano, took reserve of the Children’s Hunter Pony division and earned a championship of the Limit Junior Hunters, two firsts and a second place prize in the Maiden Hunters and reserve championship of the Novice Children’s Hunter with Modigliani. Elodie Watrous and Shimmer, owned by Lanes End Farm, were reserve champions of the Short Stirrup Hunters and with Buttons and Bows, owned by Jil Aurelliano. Won one of their Short Stirrup Walk Trot classes. Jodi Vazquez showed Telford’s Friday Night to the championship of the 3’6” Performance Working Hunter division and Samantha Wolf’s Alessio for the reserve championship of the 3’3”/ 3’6” Performance Working Hunter division.

Messenger Hill Farm returns to compete at Showplace Productions’ Spring Warm Up at Lamplight this week.
