Mettawa, IL - May 29, 2015 - Freddie and Jodi Vazquez of Messenger Hill Farm know that horse people are also dog people, too. With that connection, the Vazquez duo hope to pull at the heart strings of riders and spectators at the Showplace Spring Spectacular Horse Show at the Lamplight Equestrian Center in Chicago in order to raise money for Felines and Canines, a no kill, cage-less animal shelter in Chicago.

Felines and Canines presents rescue, adoption and spay/neuter in an innovative way that successfully adopts out over 750 animals per year. They are hoping to expand through their new project in southeastern Kentucky and to hopefully touch the lives of a conservative 100 animals per week--that's 5200 animals per year!

"We are going down to some of the most impoverished areas in southeastern Kentucky and creating a free spay and neuter clinic and safe housing facility where we will be doing spay/neuters for the public down there as well as rescuing and transporting our Kentucky dogs up north," said Kelly Thompson of the Felines and Canines organization.

Jodi Vazquez, owner and head trainer of Messenger Hill Farm, challenges competitors to donate prize money they have won throughout the week to Felines and Canines in order to spearhead their latest efforts to create a sanctuary for unwanted dogs and cats.

"When Freddie and I show one of our horses, we pledge to donate any money won that week to Felines and Canines and we encourage other people to do the same, or to make a donation in some way," Vazquez said.

Felines and Canines hopes to make a massive impact with their latest project that is underway now. Their goal is to raise $500,000 in order to build the shelter and have it up and running by the end of the year.

"In the grand scheme of things it's a small amount of money for what will be a massive impact in an area that is very horse-centric," Thompson said. "We're hoping to connect with some people at this event that feel passionate, and that maybe have a connection to Kentucky and want to help support our endeavor."

The lovely staff at Felines and Canines will be setting up near the Grand Prix ring on Saturday, June 6, complete with snacks, silent auction and of course some adoptable pets. Last year, every animal they brought was adopted out and they aim to match their success this year.

"Danny and Ron's Rescue in Wellington, FL has done such an amazing job and and we're a big supporter of them, we have one of their dogs," Vazquez said. "And so our idea was to do something like that in the Chicago area. We want to support someone from our local area as much as we can. There's going to be a lot of people at this horse show so we think this will be a great fundraiser event. Pat Boyle-the manger of Showplace Productions and Nina Moore-the owner of Lamplight Equestrian Center-have been really supportive of this endeavor and they both have dogs--and horses!--so I think everyone can relate to this great cause."
