Norfield Stables Secures Victories Across North America: Wins in Lake Placid and Spruce Meadows

Written by: Emily Riden
Client: Norfield Stables LLC
Release Date: 2015-06-29

Lake Placid, NY and Calgary, AB, Canada – June 29, 2015 – Just minutes after hanging up the phone with his wife, Molly Ashe Cawley, and learning that she had just won the $34,000 Friends of the Meadows 1.45m in Spruce Meadows, Chris Cawley turned his attention to Norfield Stables LLC student Tracy Harris who was about to go in the ring at Lake Placid. When Harris left the grass field, she had turned in a seamless and quick double clear effort that would hold up to win the Adult Over 40 Classic and claim the division championship.

The back-to-back wins in two different locations on Saturday afternoon were indicative of the kind of success that Norfield Stables LLC saw throughout the week at both the ‘Canada One’ Tournament CSI 4* at Spruce Meadows and at the Lake Placid Horse Show.

In Canada, Ashe rode to the 1.45m victory aboard Louisburg Farm’s Balous Day Date, besting an extremely competitive field of 67 entries. Ashe and Balous Day Date were one of only 11 combinations to advance to the jump-off round, which would become a close race against the clock, ending in Ashe and Balous Day Date beating Eric Lamaze and Rosana Du Park by eight-tenths of a second to take the win.

“There were only 11 clear out of 60, so the first course was hard enough. The rails fell all over the place, but Balous Day Date answered all the calls and was solid as a rock. She was spot on,” Ashe said. “She just laid it down. It was one of those jump-offs where it just looked really smooth. It didn’t even look that fast. She never missed a beat and was right with me the whole way. There was one inside turn later on in the jump-off to a big wide oxer that everybody was having trouble with, and she nailed it.”

Ashe added, “She is a great horse. She is a trier, and she is a fighter. I have to thank Louisburg Farm and Beth Johnson for the opportunity to ride her.”

While Ashe was earning top placings in Spruce Meadows on mounts including Balous Day Date, Picobello Choppin PC, Cat Balou, Cocq-a-Doodle and others, in New York, trainers Chris Cawley and Timmy Kees were leading the Norfield team to numerous wins and top ribbons at the Lake Placid Horse Shows.

Norfield’s equitation riders kicked off the first week of competition with top ribbons across the board. On Wednesday, Carly Crossfield and Ali Tritschler brought the blues home to Norfield, with Crossfield taking the top call in the WIHS Jumper Phase and Tritschler earning the win in the PHA Equitation Class. Tritschler also finished third in the WIHS Jumper Phase, and Crossfield placed third in the PHA Equitation, while Jordan Stiller picked up an impressive second place ribbon in the WIHS Hunter Phase.

Crossfield and Tritschler continued their winning ways on Thursday with a victory in the ASPCA Maclay and a third place finish in the Pessoa U.S. Hunter Seat Medal for Crossfield, while the win in the Pessoa U.S. Hunter Seat Medal went to Tritschler. Maverick Helmer, Summer Hill and Alexandra Pielet all also rode away with ribbons in the equitation for Norfield.

In the jumper ring, Alvaro Tejada topped the Jamaica Tent 1.35-Meter Jump-Off Welcome aboard his own Voltaral Palo Blanco. Tejada has spent the past few months riding, working and training alongside the team at Norfield Stables as he prepares to represent Guatemala at the Pan American Games in July.

“[Voltaral Palo Blanco] feels like she’s in great condition, better than ever,” Tejada said. “I’ve been learning a lot from Chris, Timmy and Molly during my two or three months here so far.”

Tejada and Voltaral also rode to an impressive second place finish in Friday’s $30,000 Lake Placid Jumper Classic. Tracy Harris and Carly Crossfield rounded out the week of winning with a third place ribbon in the Children’s Jumper Classic for Crossfield, and the Adult Over 40 Classic win and division championship for Harris aboard her own Une Etoile De L’Eclypse.

Harris has been riding with Norfield for the past two years, and her 10-year-old daughter, Eva Harris, now also trains with the Norfield team as well.

“I’ve known Timmy since I was 14 and Molly since we were juniors at the same time,” Harris said. “It was kind of a long time coming, but something I’ve dreamed about since I was a kid, to be able to ride with Timmy Kees.”

Harris is now able to train with not only Kees, but Ashe and Cawley as well.

“I can’t say enough good things about the program,” Harris said. “The depth of experience is incredible, between Chris on the ground, but he can also get on the horses’ and show you what he means, Timmy in terms of the equitation and the foundation on the flatwork, and Molly in the big classes, you are covered every way.”

“My daughter came in as a 9-year-old to ride with them, and being able to deal with me as an adult and her as a kid, and people that come all the way up through the grand prix and the Pan Am Games is a talent of any program, “ Harris added. “If you can cross that scope of people, it’s a gift. I wouldn’t ride anywhere else.”
