Visse Wedell at Douglas Elliman Real Estate Brings Lifetime Love of Horses to Kentucky Summer Series

Written by: Rebecca Walton
Client: Kentucky Horse Shows LLC
Release Date: 2015-06-30

Lexington, KY – June 30, 2015 – The 2015 Kentucky Summer Series is right around the corner, featuring four weeks of premier hunter/jumper events, including two World Champion Hunter Rider (WCHR) recognized weeks. This Summer Series will also include Grand Hunter Championships for the Professional Hunter, Junior/Amateur-Owner, Pony Hunter, and Children's/Adult Hunter divisions thanks to the generosity of Visse Wedell at Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

When Henri and Marsha Wedell let their 8-year-old daughter Visse tag-along to a friend’s riding lesson, they had no idea that she was headed to the farm where soon-to-be Gold medalist Melanie Smith Taylor grew up. In fact, neither of her parents were aware of a world where riders like Conrad Homfield, Joe Fargis, and Leslie Burr Howard would soon make Olympic history as the first U.S. team to bring home a Gold medal in show jumping. One thing they were aware of however, was the cost of riding, and once, when her father heard the price of a nice junior hunter, he offered to buy her a solid gold bowling ball instead. But since then, her dedication to the sport has made both parents realize that the time and expense were worth it, as Visse's love of horses and real estate have blended nicely into a successful career.

Early on, Visse rode locally on her first pony, Farnley Toby. The former school horse was well-known as a little devil and many times stopped, causing Visse to jump the last jump "alone." At the age of 12, she began riding with Holly Hugo-Vidal and had notable Junior Hunters Ziggy Stardust, Glass Slipper, and Just Once (who she’d continue riding well into her Amateur years.) Another of her well-known mounts, Legal Tender, not only carried her to Adult hunter success, but also earned Green Conformation titles at places like Madison Square Garden (Reserve Champion) and in Lexington, KY (Grand Hunter Champion) with Kelley Farmer in the irons.

Visse took a break from equestrian pursuits while attending Southern Methodist University, but after earning her Art History degree she picked up right where she left off on her beloved mount Just Once. After accepting a position at Lucy Mitchell-Innes and David Nash’s gallery in New York, she’d move her trusty mount to ride at Comfortside Farm with Lyman T. Whitehead, just outside of the city. Later, she worked in events and marketing at Christie’s Auction House, and finally struck out on her own to run a successful event and wedding planning company. Eventually Visse felt the pull of the winter horse capitol in Wellington, Florida, and it was there in 2006, that Visse’s passion for horses collided with an interest in real estate

Through her experience in the horse world, Visse knew what made farms work, and it only made sense to turn that knowledge into a valuable resource for fellow equestrians. Over the past ten years she’s come to know dozens of clients personally and insured their needs were fulfilled. She’s also built a reputation for doing detailed research to understand the market and get the most possible value out of an investment. Visse has not only found great properties for others, she has developed her own properties into some of the best that can be found in Wellington. All the while she continues to pursue her passion for the equestrian sport and lifestyle.

Visse recently broadened her equestrian focus to include not only competition, but breeding as well. She purchased Fabriano VDL {2010 Dutch Warmblood (Casall x Bleu-Chin)} during this winter’s VDL Sporthorse auction, and is now offering his impeccable pedigree to others. As she puts it, "He’s the first horse I’ve bought that comes with the ability to pay for his food!"

Also known for equestrian and animal welfare activism, Visse has been on the board of and supports several equestrian-based charities, such as the Equus Foundation, and Equestrian Aid Foundation. She co-chairs Polo for a Purpose along with P.J. Rizvi and Brandon Phillips (for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), donates to Vinceremos (therapeutic riding program) and is a Gold Medal sponsor of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation. Visse also has a soft spot for neglected, abused, and unwanted animals which is why a portion of all of her sales commissions benefit animal welfare charities. She directly supports organizations like Danny and Ron’s Rescue by adopting, and helping to place several dogs, and so far has adopted or placed more than ten ponies and horses of all types, saving them from certain death at the slaughter house.

In addition, she feels it is important to patronize events that showcase the animals and its riders, which prompted her sponsorship of several Grand Hunter Championships at the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Kentucky Summer Classic, Bluegrass Festival, and KHJA Horse Shows. Visse believes strongly in recognizing the accomplishments of horses and riders, and that is why she will offer Grand Champion prizes in Professional Hunter, Junior/Amateur-Owner, Pony Hunter, and Children's/Adult Hunter divisions. In addition to sponsoring these Championships Visse will also support the 2015 Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Riders Championships presented by Gotham North (NAJYRC) the 2015 USEF Pony Finals, The Kentucky National, and The National Horse Show.

Visse has expanded her business to include Kentucky, where she’s again making personal investments, and gaining first hand knowledge and experience that’s sure to benefit others who want to live, or own property in the horse capitol of the world. While Wellington is a different market place the hunter/jumper world is quickly investing in some of the most prime areas of the Bluegrass State. Licensed in both Florida and Kentucky, Visse will be at the shows in Lexington all season. Those in the market to buy, sell, or lease in Kentucky or Florida can turn to Visse for a knowledgeable equestrian real estate agent. By contacting her at 561.972.1177 or visiting her website at
