Castlewood Riders Qualify for ASPCA Maclay Finals at Southeast Medal Finals

Written by: Emily Riden
Client: Castlewood Farm, LLC.
Release Date: 2015-09-25

Jacksonville, FL – September 25, 2015 – In just a few short weeks, Castlewood Farm riders Alex Joerg, Nicole Liebowitz and Lia Screnci will be making a special trip to Kentucky. The three junior riders successfully punched their tickets to the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Finals this past weekend at the ASPCA Maclay Region 3 Final held at the Southeast Medal Finals.

Qualifying for the prestigious ASPCA Maclay Finals is no easy feat; it’s one that requires qualifying for the regional finals, where only the best of the best then earn the chance to travel to the CP National Horse Show and vie for the Maclay title. For all three junior riders, their hard work with Castlewood Farm trainers Alan Korotkin and Susan Tuccinardi paid off in droves at the Region 3 Final, securing their shot at the Maclay Final.

For Screnci, this marks her last year of equitation finals as she completes her junior riding career and continues riding at the University of Georgia where she is currently a freshman.

“This was only my fourth or fifth time jumping this horse, Upper Crombie,” Screnci said of the Dutch Warmblood gelding she leased from Chris Sorensen of Sorensen Stables for the weekend and for her remaining indoor equitation finals. “He’s a really good jumper type, and we were able to get him quiet enough to go around the equitation. My ride was really smooth, and there were a couple of places where he helped me out. We were able to keep it together and ended really nicely. I’m excited to be able to show him again at the [CP National Horse Show] and at [the Pennsylvania National Horse Show].”

While the Maclay Region 3 Final was a major highlight of Castlewood Farm’s weekend at the Southeast Medal Finals, the young equitation riders were not the only ones bringing top honors home to the Wellington, Florida based farm.

In the Low Amateur-Owner Jumpers, Beth Craven and her own Cantor claimed the top call and the blue ribbon in the Southeast Low Amateur-Owner Jumper Finals as the only successful clear round.

“I got Cantor in March of this year, and he has been amazing from day one,” Craven said of the 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. “I recently moved up to the low AO jumpers in July of this year. Going to the SEMF show was our fifth show at that height, so I just wanted us to have good solid trips.”

Craven continued, “Going into the Low AO Jumper Finals, I really hoped we would do well, and Cantor was exceptional. He gave 100 percent over the course, which was technical but straightforward. The jumps easily fell even if barely touched. After the last fence I couldn't believe we kept all the jumps up. Even in the Junior Jumper only one went clear. When we won being the only clear round I couldn't stop smiling! He is such an amazing horse, and I'm so lucky to have him.”

In the hunter ring, Margot Hirsch and Don Perignon rounded out Castlewood Farm’s extremely successful weekend by sweeping their classes in the Children’s 15-17 Hunters before ultimately being named the division champions.

The Southeast Medal Finals, held at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center in Jacksonville, Florida, mark just the beginning of Castlewood Farm’s indoor circuit, as riders head next to the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, followed by the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and the CP National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky.
