Nina Moore’s Kodachrome Wraps Up Spectacular Summer

Written by: Mary Adelaide Brakenridge
Client: Lamplight Equestrian Center
Release Date: 2015-10-07

Wayne, IL – October 7, 2015 – Kodachrome may be new to the U.S. hunter scene, but he’s already making a splash. The striking chestnut racked up the ribbons in his first summer competing with trainer Russell Frey for owner Nina Moore, who is also the owner of Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois. Moore purchased Kodachrome in June from Will Roberts, who imported him.

“He hadn’t been in the country very long,” Moore explained. “He was a nice horse when we got him, but he has really blossomed under Russell’s program.”

Over the course of the summer, the 7-year-old Warmblood gelding consistently stepped up to the plate for his new connections. Competing in national hunter derbies and the 3’3” performance hunters in both Kentucky and Illinois, he rose to the top of his classes.

Kodachrome handled his hunter derby debut like a pro, finishing third in the USHJA $5,000 National Hunter Derby at Lamplight Equestrian Center’s Equifest I in late July. He returned the next week to take top honors in the USHJA $5,000 National Hunter Derby at Equifest II.

After making a trip to Kentucky, where he was second in a national hunter derby and won the 3’3” Performance Hunter Championship at the KHJA Horse Show, Kodachrome returned to the Midwest and took second place in the national hunter derby at The Chicago Hunter Derby presented by Canadian Pacific, held at Annali-Brookwood Farm in Antioch, Illinois.

Frey and Kodachrome capped the summer season with a victory in the $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Showplace Fall Classic.

“He is pretty unflappable,” Frey said after the horse’s most recent derby victory. “He is learning and trying to figure it all out, and he is doing a really good job. I really think he is a fabulous horse, and I have a lot of high hopes for him.”

Moore noted that she was pleased with the way Kodachrome had handled every challenge with ease, showing off his consistency and quality throughout the summer.

“You always hope for the best,” she said. “Kodachrome has fulfilled everything Russell said he thought he could do. We’ve been very lucky with this horse. He’s got a really good mind and a sweet personality, and he’s really taken everything in stride. A lot of the horses in the derbies have great technique; it’s kind of a given that they’re going to have that. But he just lopes around and makes it look easy.”
