CP National Horse Show Honors Al Schlom with Welles Family Trophy

LEXINGTON, Ky.- Oct. 29, 2015 - Few people have given as much of their time to the industry than Al Schlom, who will be awarded the 2015 Welles Family Trophy at the CP National Horse Show.

The CP National Horse Show is honored each year to award the trophy to a special individual who has made an exceptional commitment and contribution to the sport and to the equestrian industry.

Schlom, always a popular and recognizable figure at horse shows throughout the nation for decades, spent much of his time training and helping his young daughter, Candice King, become one of the great riders in the United States. She has since represented the United States on a number of Nations Cups teams, competed in the FEI World Cup Finals and scored numerous victories in grand prix events across the nation and around the world.

It was during this teaching and training that Schlom realized a wide-open opportunity available to him in the horse show world. It was a business that would keep him close to his daughter and at the same time give him a chance to help so many of his friends in the industry. That opportunity was equine insurance.

With his extensive list of contacts across the country and a deep knowledge of the industry itself, Schlom's insurance career skyrocketed. Stops along the way at Wells Fargo Insurance brought him, eventually, to the doorsteps of the nation's top equine insurance agency, Taylor, Harris Insurance Services.

When Schlom signed on, Taylor, Harris Insurance Services President Michael Taylor said, "We are so pleased that Al Schlom, one of the most revered, most humble and reputable equine insurance agents in the United States, has joined our company. We are very, very pleased to have him as one of our agents."

When told he would be receiving this year's Welles Family Trophy, Schlom, whose 90th birthday is this month, laughed and said, "Well, there's something to be said about longevity."

"I am overwhelmed that the industry would recognize me," he continued. "I'm so lucky that what I chose to do allowed me to be near my daughter as her career blossomed."

And how does Schlom account for that longevity? "Being around the horses all my life, being able to work outside and doing the things I love. It doesn't get much better than that," he said.

This month Schlom joined with the American Association for Equine Sports Preservation (AAESP) as the equine consultant for the new horse therapy program for the National Veterans Foundation, named the "Horses Healing Veterans Program."

"We're thrilled about this collaboration with WWII veteran Al Schlom," said Allison Booth, AAESP founder. "Al's enthusiasm to help fellow veterans will be a huge help towards raising awareness and financial support for the National Veterans Foundation and developing the Horses Healing Veterans Program."

The mission of the American Association for Equine Sports Preservation (AAESP) is to protect the historical, cultural and economic value of equestrian sports, and related industries, throughout the world in recognition of the innumerable contributions of horses to mankind over centuries.
