Release Date: 2015-12-06

Las Vegas - Dec. 6, 2015 - Suzan Oakley, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Equine), Cert ISELP, will teach atan Equine Imaging Wet Lab during the 61st Annual Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention in Las Vegas Monday, Dec. 7 from 6-9 p.m. The event is sponsored by SonoSite, a FUJIFILM Company. Dr. Oakley will a share her advanced proficiency in ultrasound technique of the stifle and how best to obtain superior ultrasound images of the stifle. Check by SonoSite booth number 3438 at the AAEP Convention for location details.

"Ultrasound is more sensitive than X-ray for assessing issues of the stifle, a challenging joint to image," Dr. Oakley said. "With ultrasound, you can evaluate the joint lining, the amount of fluid present and if there are the presence of bone spurs or degenerative disease. An ultrasound exam is essential for complete evaluation of the stifles."

Dr. Oakley works in South Florida with Wellington Equine Sports Medicine. A past president of the Florida Association of Equine Practitioners (FAEP), she is one of only a handful of North American equine veterinarians certified by the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) a highly respected international organization that focuses on imaging and lameness in the equine athlete. She has lectured nationally on equine sports medicine topics and has been a frequent instructor on ultrasound imaging as it pertains to equine sports medicine for various organizations, including ISELP in the U.S. and Europe.
"It's a very exciting time in the field of ultrasound because the technology is advancing rapidly, providing constantly improving resolution," said Dr. Oakley. "This allows us to accurately image deeper structures, such as the stifle, the pelvis, the back and the hoof."
Dr. Oakley and her colleagues at Wellington Equine Sports Medicine provide specialized care for dressage, hunter/jumper, polo and Western sport horses in Wellington and South Florida.
