Stewart, Alfano, and Orlando Dominate Hunters at Monmouth County Horse Show’s Opening Day

Freehold, NJ – August 16, 2006 – The 111th Annual Monmouth County Horse Show got underway today at East Freehold Park in Freehold, NJ, and some of the nation’s leading professionals showcased their mounts in the Grand Hunter Ring. As one of the oldest continuous equestrian events in the country, this USEF “AA” rated competition is recognized by the American Hunter and Jumper Foundation (AHJF) as one of the nation’s finest equestrian events. The Monmouth County Horse Show is one of only six designated events in the Northeast Region that meets the standards required to be part of AHJF’s World Champion Hunter Rider (WCHR) Program.

In the Regular Working Hunters, Rock Star and Jennifer Alfano earned a blue ribbon win. Alfano, who rides for SBS Farms, Inc. in Buffalo, NY, rode Rock Star for Jennifer Burger. Scott Stewart topped the charts in the other Regular Working over fences class with Dynamic, owned by Fashion Farm of Philadelphia, PA. Championships for all rated hunter divisions will be awarded tomorrow as the divisions conclude.

In the First Year Green Working Hunters, Scott Stewart and Heartfelt lead the way in the first class. Heartfelt is a six year old owned by Molly Ohrstrom of The Plains, VA. “He’s really easy,” commented Stewart, who has ridden the horse for about a year. “He received good ribbons through Florida, and he was champion at his last show in Upperville, Virginia. He felt great in the ring today.”

Topping the leaderboard in both the second over fences class and the under saddle was Holly Orlando aboard Castle Rock, owned by Danielle Giorgio. “Rocko is a six year old Dutch Warmblood,” reported Orlando about her mount. “He showed in the First Years with Geoff Teall at the very end of Florida, so he’s done it a few times, but he didn’t start at the beginning. He’s gotten better and better every week, and I’ve figured him out a little bit more each week too.” She added with a smile, “He’s simple and just a good guy. He’s not spooky or anything like that, and he’s a lot of fun- very pretty across the ground. We just love him. He’s adorable and fun to have in the barn.”

“I’ve always liked this horse show,” continued Orlando. “I worked for Leo Conroy, the show manager, in the late 90s, and we always did this show. It’s a lot fun, and they do a good job with it. There aren’t too many people here and everything is close together. It’s a World Champion Hunter Rider show, and it’s nice for me on the jumpers because I can move up a level here.”

Orlando will also ride Old Salem Farm’s Great Pleasure in tomorrow’s $25,000 Paul Miller Automotive Group Grand Prix.

In the Second Year Green Working Hunters, Scott Stewart aboard Alexa Weisman’s Music Street and Jennifer Bauersachs and Maria Takacs’ Mombo were the top two contenders today. Daryl D’Anna’s horse Tom Ford and Michelle Grayson also received high placings.

The first class of the Green Conformation Working Hunters pinned Scott Stewart of Flemington, NJ, and his horse Banner into the top spot. In the second over fences class, Lyman T. Whitehead piloted Margo Taft-Stever’s Summertime for the blue ribbon.

As a member of the World Champion Hunter Rider program, the Monmouth County Horse Show was chosen by the American Hunter and Jumper Foundation for its high show standards, which include such important facets as good footing, appropriate schooling areas, exhibitor hospitality, appropriate ring size, top judges and officials, responsiveness to exhibitor feedback, parking, and seating.

The WCHR National Awards program recognizes the top Professional, Junior, Adult Amateur, Pony and Amateur riders through points accumulated throughout the year at the rider's top four WCHR shows. These riders are then invited to compete directly against one another in Challenge Classes at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in Upper Marlboro, MD, in October.

“I’ve been coming here for years,” noted Stewart. “It’s nice because we’re based in New Jersey, and this is the only local horse show that we do. The rings are wonderful to ride in, and the course designing is great. They do a great job with this show.”

Hunter competition continues tomorrow with the professional divisions and the championship awards.
