Kitt Ritter Captures Win in First ASPCA Maclay Qualifier in Region Two

Saugerties, NY – September 5, 2006 – The first Regional qualifying competitions for the ASPCA Maclay National Championship were held on Monday, September 4, 2006. Region 2 (East), which includes New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, held their qualifying show at the HITS-on-the-Hudson show grounds in Saugerties, NY.

The ASPCA Maclay class has been held since 1933, and its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992.

The Region 2 Maclay qualifier is one of the most hotly contested competitions of the year. Many of the top riders in the country belong to this region, and the top riders advance to the National Championship, which is held this year during the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament on November 1-5, 2006 and is produced by the National Horse Show Association.

The winner of Region 2 is Kitt Ritter of Charleston, SC. Ritter has ridden with Andre Dignelli at Heritage Farm since this winter at the Winter Equestrian Festival. Known more as a hunter rider, she was third in the nation in the Large Junior 15 & Under Hunter division last year on Notoriety when she trained with Pat Dodson of North Carolina.

In Monday’s regional qualifier, Ritter rode Cadeau, an eight year old bay gelding she has leased from Heritage Farm since January. The pair also finished fourth in the USHJA Hunterdon Cup earlier this summer at the Show Circuit Magazine/USEF Junior Hunter East Coast Finals after a ride-off where riders switched horses.

Although she still lives in Charleston, SC, Ritter has been commuting up to New York to train with Dignelli this summer. She had originally planned on competing in her own Zone qualifier, but Dignelli thought the Zone 2 competition would be better for her.

Ritter was one of the final six riders called back for the test out of 61 entries in the class. Ritter conquered her nerves and came out on top for the class. She will compete this year for the first time in the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship National Championship in Syracuse this fall.

The top 25 finishers in the Region 2 qualifier are:
