Nikko Ritter Wins Region 3 ASPCA Maclay Qualifier

New York, NY – September 19, 2006 – Four Regional qualifying competitions for the ASPCA Maclay National Championship were held this past weekend on September 16-17, 2006.

The ASPCA Maclay class has been held since 1933, and its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992.

The top riders in each Region advance to the National Championship, which is held this year during the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament on November 1-5, 2006 and is produced by the National Horse Show Association.

The winner of the Region 3 qualifier this year is Nikko Ritter of Geneva, FL. Region 3 (Southeast) consists of riders from 12 Southeastern states and was held at the RMI Chateau Elan Harvest Show in Braselton, GA.

Ritter trains with Frank and Stacia Madden of Beacon Hill Show Stables. He rode 007, his equitation partner for the last year. It was a good win for Ritter and his horse, who had been relaxing at home recently. “He’s been at home, not doing much,” Ritter explained. “There was no need for him to travel to the Hamptons or anything like that, so he got to rest. He definitely rose to the occasion here.”

Ritter was one of 42 riders to contest the first over fences phase and moved on to the flat phase. The top ten from there were asked to return for a test, and at this point Ritter was sitting in second. The riders were asked to perform various challenges, such as trotting and counter-cantering a jump, turning on the haunches, and hand galloping a jump. “The test was by far the deciding factor,” Ritter acknowledged. “We actually hand galloped. We flew from one end of the ring to the other,” he added with a laugh.

Ritter plans to compete on 007 in the USEF/Pessoa Hunt Seat Medal Finals and the Tad Coffin Washington International Horse Show Equitation Finals before competing in the ASPCA Maclay National Championships for the fourth time. It will be his last chance, as this is his last year in the junior divisions. “I’d love to win it, but I’m not going to stress,” he pointed out. “Whatever happens happens. We’ll see!”

Four other ASPCA Maclay Regional qualifiers were held this weekend. Region 5 saw Brooke Coleman of Houston, TX, come out with the blue ribbon. Lindsey Sceats of Colorado Springs, CO, won Region 6, Lyndsay Thornton of Vernon, BC, Canada won Region 7, and Torie Immel of Newport Beach, CA, picked up the win in Region 10.
