Sponsorships Attract Top Competitors and Up the Ante with Leading Rider Award

Lexington, KY – May 11, 2007 – The Hagyard Challenge Series, a series of seven major show jumping competitions, kicked off yesterday with its first grand prix, the $30,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix. The class was held at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show in the Sheila C. Johnson Arena.

The Hagyard Challenge Series features $170,000 in prize money and will host its second grand prix on Thursday, May 17, at the Kentucky Spring Classic. The series continues at the Kentucky Horse Park throughout the summer, with the final event, the $50,000 World Cup qualifying grand prix, scheduled for the Kentucky National Indoor Horse Show on September 28, 2007.

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute sponsors the challenge, and their involvement has generated additional interest in the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows and attracted some of the best horses and riders in the country.

“Hagyard is known in this area and throughout the veterinary community as the premier equine medical institute, in addition to being the oldest and largest,” said Betsy Fishback, director of community relations for the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows. “For them to recognize what we have here, one of the nicest horse shows, and the quality horses that attend, it’s a great joint effort for all of us. The show uses Hagyard for their veterinary services, and the veterinarians recognize and foster the quality of horses that we have here.”

“This year we’ve had the best horses and riders attend these May shows,” she added. “I think the sponsorship has really attracted the top competitors. And, if you have two grand prix classes a week, it certainly helps the riders. In addition to drawing in top horses and riders, Haygard’s sponsorship also generates the interest and support of additional sponsors. Haygard has raised the level of interest in this event, and other sponsors are definitely following their lead.”

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is one of the oldest and largest equine veterinary practices in the world. Founded in 1876, the institute offers a staff with qualifications unparalleled by any single non-university veterinary group in the equine industry, and Hagyard veterinarians have dedicated themselves to the health and well-being of the horse for more than 130 years.

Known for its excellence in veterinary medicine, the institute’s reputation was built on its continued effort to increase veterinary knowledge and improve the state-of-the-art treatments and surgeries offered to its diverse equine clientele. Their clients include international breeding operations and world-renowned race horses, as well as three-day eventers, show jumpers and pleasure horses. Their Sport Horse Program continues to serve the nation’s top equine athletes, which contributes to Haygard’s relationship with the Kentucky Horse Shows.

“I’m really happy with the relationship we have with Hagyard,” commented Hugh Kincannon, manager of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows and Kentucky Horse Shows LLC. “I think it’s mutually beneficial, and we’ve been pleased with both their sponsorship and their efforts to involve other sponsors, as well as the veterinary services that they provide for the horse show. Their sponsorship definitely keeps our horse shows healthy.”

In addition to incredible prize money in the Hagyard Challenge Series, a Leading Rider Award worth $30,000 will also be presented at the end of the series.
