Katherine Newman Prevails for Top Tricolors with Due North and Day Dream

Lexington, KY – May 19, 2007 – Junior hunters competed for championship honors today at the Kentucky Spring Classic Horse Show as they showed in their final two classes over fences. Exhibitors were met with beautiful weather as they started at 8 a.m. in the Stonelea Arena. This week’s courses were designed by Gerry Briggs.

The Small Junior 15 and Under Hunters showed first, and Rachel DeGabrielle rode her horse Polina for the tricolor. Yesterday they earned first, second and sixth, and today they came away with first and fourth. Fourteen-year-old DeGabrielle trains with Tim and Kelly Goguen and lives in Palm City, FL. Reserve went to Kaitlin Campbell and Unique, a horse owned by Sue Scherer of Atlanta, GA. Campbell was second and seventh today, in addition to winning two blue ribbons and a fifth yesterday.

“I just got my horse during WEF [Winter Equestrian Festival],” said DeGabrielle. “She’s pretty easy to ride. She has a big stride and jumps well, so she’s easy to find the jumps on. She’s sweet and easygoing.” She added, “I thought the courses rode well today. The handy hunter was fine. It was a little hard starting with the six going uphill, but the rest was pretty good.”

Jennifer Waxman, who was champion last week aboard Saloon, captured the championship again today in the Large Junior 15 and Under Hunters with Sister Parish. They received first, second and third in previous classes, and they won fifth and second this morning. Waxman, who resides in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, piloted the mare for Whitney Roper and trains with Ken and Emily Smith. Alexandra Arute and Granted took home the reserve after pinning first, second, third and fourth. Granted is owned by Olympic Dreams LLC of Avon, CT.

Katherine Newman of Wellington, FL, was awarded the championship for the Large Junior 16-17 Hunters once again this week with Due North. She earned the tricolor last week on the catch-ride and had successful rides on the gelding again this weekend. Due North, owned by Clementine Goutal, won two blue ribbons and a fourth earlier, and today they secured another first and fourth.

“Due North felt awesome,” commented Newman. “He was just incredible both days, and it was really exciting to be champion both weeks. I definitely built off last week. I just knew him better and knew how he would be in the ring. I had a better idea of what I needed to do to let him be his best.”

Newman trains with her parents Kathy and Gerry Newman, and she also earned high placings upon Nairobi, a horse owned by Kimberly Wang. She rode Nairobi for Nora and Morgan Thomas. Odette and Alexandra Beiderman took first, third and sixth yesterday and third today to secure the reserve championship. Beiderman rode Odette for owner Amanda Cohen of Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the Small Junior 16-17 Hunters, Newman earned another tricolor aboard Day Dream, owned by Mimi Abel-Smith. Yesterday she won a first and two seconds on the horse, and today she pinned first and second to secure the championship. Reserve was presented to Davis Cup and Alex Stathis of Short Hills, NJ.

The Kentucky Spring Classic Horse Show concludes tomorrow at the Kentucky Horse Park, and championships will be presented to the amateur-owner and pony hunters.
