Jimmy Torano Brings Home the Blue with Ormsby Hill and Magic Cruise at Kentucky Spring Classic

Written by: Rebecca Walton
Client: Kentucky Horse Shows LLC http://www.kentuckyhorseshows.com
Release Date: 2008-05-16

Lexington, KY May 16, 2008 Rain once again changed the plans at the Kentucky Spring Classic, currently underway at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Originally scheduled for the Shelia C. Johnson Arena, the $1,500 1.35m and the $5,000 1.45m Open Jumper classes were moved to the indoor arena.

The 1.45m Open Jumper course proved to be very difficult, with only six of the 23 entries qualifying for the jump-off. The course included a liverpool, a triple combination and two tight two-stride combinations. The jump-off was a tight, winding track with numerous inside options. The course, designed by Richard Jeffery of Bournemouth, England, was scored under a Table II.2(b) format.

Lisa Jacquin on Amis De Kannan, owned by Trestle Tree Farm of Dowingtown, PA, was the first rider to qualify for the jump-off. Riding quickly and carefully, she came home clear with a time of 39.306 seconds. Manuel Torres and Chambacunero, owned by Ana Maria De Cadena, tried to challenge Jacquin for the lead. They pulled one rail and earned four faults, which would hold up for the fifth place ribbon. Todd Minikus rode Romy, owned by the Diamond Group, to a clear jump-off round with a time of 36.010 seconds, taking over the lead. Minikus resides in Loxahatchee, FL.

Aaron Vale followed on Danacar, owned by Hidden Trail Farm of The Plains, VA. Vale picked up a strong gallop, cleared all of the fences, and came through the finish timers in 35.909 seconds, taking over the top spot.

Jimmy Torano of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Ormsby Hill entered the ring ready for action. After a clear first round, they moved into the jump-off with confidence. Torano tightened the turns and took risks, and they paid off when he finished with a time of 35.905 seconds, only four one-thousandths of a second faster than Vale. Shane Sweetnam and Triviant, owned by the Curtis-Lourie Group of Palm Beach, FL, would be the last pair to compete. In the jump-off they had two rails, dropping them into sixth place. Torano and Ormsby Hill remained victorious.

After winning the class for the second time in two weeks, Torano said, He was good. Im actually just trying to get a lot of practice in the indoor because hes normally not a great indoor horse. Im trying to decide if Im going to do him in the classic or if Im going to do the grand prix with him, he explained. I did him indoors yesterday and he was fifth, so I wanted to get him in there again today. He jumped the first round really well and he was fast in the jump-off, so I was happy with him.

Although the weather conditions were not ideal, Torano and his family love coming to the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows. We have a big bus and a big camper that we stay in on the campgrounds, which is very convenient, especially now with the baby, Torano grinned. Were also fortunate that we have the indoor ring so that we can move classes in there. We come here every year on our way north. This is always a stop for us. This year weve decided to come back in the summer too.

Torano and his family are returning so that his wife, Danielle, can try to compete for the $50,000 Hagyard Leading Rider Bonus. She won the $30,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic Grand Prix CSI 3* last week with her mare Marlo. The $215,000 Hagyard Challenge Series includes seven grand prix events, and the top competitor will be awarded a $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus. The bonus will be awarded after the $50,000 World Cup qualifying grand prix, scheduled for the Kentucky National Indoor Horse Show on Friday, September 26.

I figure we might as well take another shot at a couple of those classes in the summer and see what happens. If all goes well, well come back in September, Torano revealed. The bonus is a great incentive. When I read there was a $50,000 bonus, I was amazed. I couldnt believe it. Thats really nice that they do that.

Torano was also victorious in the $1,500 1.35m Open Jumper class, this time aboard Magic Cruise, owned by SCNC Investments of Miami Beach, FL. The dapple gray mare crossed the jump-offs finish line in a smooth 31.673 seconds. Robin Sweely was the first rider to make the jump-off on Tinkas Lad, owned by Acorn Hill Farm of Madison, VA. Her time of 34.769 would earn her the third place award. Kent Farrington of Wellington, FL, and his mount Halftime passed Sweelys time with daring turns, capturing a time of 32.777 seconds for the red ribbon.

Tomorrow the Kentucky Spring Classic will host the $20,000 Bluegrass Classic. On Sunday, top competitors will participate in the $55,000 Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix CSI 3*, a member event of the AGA Grand Prix Series.
