Margie Engle and Pamina L Race to Victory in the $40,000 RV Sales of Broward Kentucky Classic Grand Prix at the Kentucky Summer Classic

Lexington, KY- August 9, 2008- Today’s feature class at the Kentucky Summer Classic was the $40,000 RV Sales of Broward Kentucky Classic Grand Prix, a member event of the AGA Grand Prix Series. Out riding a field of thirty, Margie Engle and Hidden Creek’s Pamina L, owned by Hidden Creek Farm of Oak Creek, WI took top honors.

Engle and Pamina L went double clear in a time of 32.427. “Pamina is a naturally quick horse. She hadn’t done a lot of grand prix, but she did do some speed classes before I got her,” explained Engle, “I figured I’d take a shot. I was a little worried about the long gallop to the two-stride because that was tight for me in the first round. I wanted to be quick enough in the rest of the course so I could get to the two-stride slow enough. Her style of going makes the combinations ride very tight.”

Engle was one of six to go clear. “It was a little more technical than the other day, but I thought there were going to be a lot more clean then there were,” said Engle, “You had a mixture of some experienced horses and experienced riders, and you had some really young horses and some younger riders. It wasn’t really big but it was technical, you had rails everywhere.”

Besides rails coming down, the problem fence of the day seemed to be Richard Jeffery’s water jump. “After a while they know to jump across the water. It doesn’t hurt them if they step on the tape, it’s not like if they hit a rail and they feel it. We don’t teach them to go around jumping puddles. Mine are young enough and green enough and they still over jump it, they get plenty of height,” said Engle, “I’m a bad one to ask about the water because I think it’s outdated. I like the idea of it, teaching the horse to lengthen, but I think you can do that with a triple bar. I think its tough on the horses, to penalize them the same for crashing through a fence as stepping on the tape.”

For the other five who made it to the jump-off, the water did not seem to be a problem. Second place honors went to Joe Fargis and Kimber, owned by Hidden Trail Farm of The Plains, VA. The pair went double clear in a time of 35.131. Third place was awarded to Angel Karolyi and Boxster, owned by Manor Bridge Farm of Elgin, IL. They also went double clear, and did it in a time of 39.526. In fourth place, it was Hillary Simpson and Stedet’s Leroy, owned by DK-USA Sport Horse LLC of Durham, NC. They completed the course in a time of 35.470 with a rail at fence 12B, a yellow, blue, and white oxer. Engle came back to pick up the pink ribbon aboard Hidden Creek’s Coroya Z, owned by Hidden Creek Farm of Oak Creek, WI. Engle’s second jump-off round took 44.969 seconds, with a refusal at fence 4, the stone wall. Rounding out the jump-off in sixth place was Tracey Weinberg and Cromwell, owned by Tracey Weinberg and The Weinberg Brokerage Group of Lovettesville, VA.

Gigi Setler, the president of RV Sales of Broward, sponsored today’s grand prix event. “Margie is a good friend and I’m so glad she won,” said Setler. “I like to give back to the sport what riders give to me. I try to work with the horse show that does the most for the sport. Bobby Murphy has done a really good job with Kentucky. He’s really trying hard for the riders, and to make a difference in the sport, so I decided to work with him, Hugh Kincannon, and The Kentucky Horse Shows.”

The Kentucky Hose Shows take place at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park. “This is one of the best facilities we have in our country,” raved Engle, “They’ve done a wonderful job with the footing, and they make a great effort here. They always do nice things for the exhibitors, they have parties and they have food for everybody. The barns are clean, there are always places to ride. This facility is as nice as anywhere you go in the world. It’s a beautiful, big open space. I don’t think they come much nicer than here.”

The Kentucky Summer Classic concludes tomorrow with the High and Low Amateur Owner/Junior Jumper Classics in the Walnut Arena.
