Lexington, KY – August 10, 2008 – Today marked the final day of competition at the Kentucky Summer Classic. The weather was sunny with a few clouds at the Kentucky Horse Park. The day began at 8 a.m. in the Stonelea Ring with the $1000 WIHS/NAL Children’s Hunter Classic.

Thirty-six entries competed in today’s Children’s Hunter Classic. The class is a member event of the 2008 North American League, and the Washington International Championships. It is a two-round competition using open numerical scoring. The top twelve riders with the highest scores after the first round return for a second round of jumps. Scores from the two rounds are added together to determine the final standings.

Today’s top score went to Shelby Benjamin, of Lake Forest, IL, and Amor Van Den Hoendrik. During the first round Benjamin received the high score of 85. She returned for the second round and received a score of 83, leaving her with an overall score of 168.

Benjamin knew that she would have her work cut out for her going into the first round. “He looks at the jumps a lot, but we can actually use that as an advantage because then he jumps better and higher. My job is to just to keep a lot of leg so he keeps going forward. He was really good today and really listened,” she explained.

Despite her high first round score, Benjamin still had to put in an excellent second round to win the class. “I had to make sure I didn’t lose focus, and find all my distances. I was also focused on making sure I got my lead changes. We were having a little difficulty with that earlier, but we managed to get it all done,” she smiled.

Course designer Bobby Murphy used different elements for this class. “It’s a pretty basic style course, but what I’ve done is incorporated some derby type obstacles. I’ve used the derby jumps to make decorations, to make it look abstract, and a little bit different,” described Murphy. “With the derbies becoming more popular I think you will see elements from that in classics and other classes. That’s kind of what I’ve been doing all week, incorporating derby concepts into our regular divisions. The challenging concepts today are the style of jumps.”

Benjamin had some concern about the natural style obstacles. “They made me a little nervous, especially the first brush jump during the second round. I was really ready for anything, but he was really good. He’s gotten a lot better. He’s getting a lot less peaky.”

Today’s second place ribbon went to Kaitlyn King and Kiss Me Quick, owned by Morgan Rusnak of Menton, OH. King was fourth after the first round with a score of 79.5. She had an excellent second trip earning a score of 83, for a total of 162.5. The third place prize was awarded to Meehan Shirey aboard Hadij, owned by Alison Register. Shirey earned a first round score of 82, and followed with a second round score of 79, totaling 161 points.

Next week the Kentucky Horse Park will feature the USEF Pony Hunter Finals. The Bluegrass Festival Horse Show will begin August 20, 2008 and is also hosted by Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC.
