Final List of Qualified Riders for ASPCA Maclay National Championship Announced

New York, NY - September 29, 2008 - The final two regional qualifiers for the ASPCA Maclay were held this past weekend. Hayley Barnhill of Collierville, TN, took the top prize in Region 4, while Julia Weiss of Greenwich, CT, beat out a big group in Region 1 for victory. The ASPCA Maclay National Championship will be held at the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament, featuring the 125th National Horse Show. The show will run from October 29 to November 2, 2008, at the Oncenter Complex in Syracuse, NY.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. Last year’s ASPCA Maclay National Championship winner was Kimberly McCormack of Clermont, NJ.

Fourteen-year-old Barnhill won the Region 4 qualifier. She rode a seven-year-old Danish Warmblood, Beyond Common Sense, that she has leased for four months. Barnhill has competed at the ASPCA Maclay National Championship for the past two years, and this year at her Regional qualifier, she was determined to take a risk for the win.

“I did an inside turn in the jumping phase that others didn’t do,” Barnhill explained. “My trainer David Pellegrini and I thought if I couldn’t do it here, then I couldn’t in Syracuse.” Barnhill’s risk paid off as she moved to the top of the list after the jumping phase. She was second after the flat phase, and the top four riders were tested. Barnhill completed the test that included counter cantering and showing changes of lead. “Everyone in the top four was very good,” she said. “I’m really shocked and happy (that I won). It’s a dream, and I can’t believe it happened.”

Barnhill’s goal for the ASPCA Maclay National Championship in Syracuse is to do the best she can and have a great round. “It would be great to get a ribbon,” she remarked, “but I just want to have a good trip on my horse.”

Julia Weiss rode Redfield Farm’s nine-year-old gelding Schubert to the win in Region 1. This was a big win for Weiss, who showed in her third Regional competition. She and Schubert competed last year at the ASPCA Maclay National Championship in Syracuse. “He has the most amazing canter,” Weiss described. “He’s very willing to please and do whatever you ask him to do.”

Weiss, who trains with Val Renihan, was placed third after the jumping phase. “I was nervous going in because I wanted to get through (to the final) again,” she recalled. Weiss won the PHA Medal the day before and felt that her riding was going well. “I was able to watch a lot go in the class before me. I did my exact plan, and I was thrilled with my ride,” she said.

Weiss moved up to first in the standings after the flat phase and was the final rider on course when the top ten were tested. “It is my last year, so it’s now or never,” she remarked. “At that point I knew I had qualified. Sometimes my nerves get the best of me, but it helped that I knew I was in.”

After she was named the winner, Weiss said she was “kind of in awe.” She added, “I never expected to win Regionals. Zazou (Hoffman) and Emma (Lipman) are such great riders. I was basically in shock.” Weiss’ goal for the national championship is to advance to the second round and hopefully get a ribbon. “I don’t feel like I have pressure to win the final,” she noted, “but I really feel like it’s nice to know that no matter what, I won at Regionals. It’s a great feeling.”
