Stolen Command: From Riches to Rags; The Downfall of a Race Horse

Written by: Phelps Media Group, Inc.
Client: Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue http://www.pthr.org
Release Date: 2009-09-02

Loxahatchee, FL - Sept. 3, 2009 -- From 2004 to 2006, Stolen Command was a revered racehorse, racing at the Florida racetracks. On March 31, 2006 she ran her last race. In the spring of 2007 she produced a foal named Stolen Cat, who is currently in training. In April 2008 she produced a baby they called "Hoot." When she was bred in 2009, she came back open. What happened to Stolen Command after that is unclear; she most definitely slipped through the cracks.

On August 20, 2009, Pure Thoughts Inc. received a call about a mare that was in need. She was underweight and the people who were caring for her could not put on the weight. How or why Stolen Command ended up on a residential suburban area in Boynton Beach with 5 other horses is still unclear to us. The one fact that was unmistakable was that this mare was in trouble and would not last much longer. Stolen Command was underweight by about 400 pounds; she has scratches and bruises all over her body and could barely walk to the trailer. Upon arrival at Pure Thoughts facility it was late at night and dark. Stolen Command was put in a stall with fresh hay, shavings and water. She made a beeline for the water.

Stolen Command was evaluated and her rehabilitation program started. Brad Gaver, Co-Founder of Pure Thoughts Inc. & Florida Thoroughbred Rehabilitation and Placement stated, "Each horse that arrives at our facility is evaluated and given a personalized rehabilitation plan. We never know what situation is coming through our gates; the programs are case by case. Although the race horses are the same breed, participating in the same sport, each condition is unique to that horse. Stolen Command did not get in this condition from the sport of racing. This is neglect by the humans that were to be caring for her."

Stolen Command has been at the rescue for one week. The progress she has made has been small as she also had a very large parasite load. Her cuts and wounds are beginning to heal, she has gained a very small amount of weight but we should see more progress now that the de-worming program has begun, her hooves have abscesses as well as a hole in the sole of one front hoof and a hole in one of her soles.

Stolen Command's road to recovery will be a long one. To view pictures and videos of her condition to date as well as monitor her recovery you can visit www.PTHR.org.
