Racehorses Narrowly Saved from Slaughter - IMMEDIATE HELP NEEDED

Written by: Phelps Media Group, Inc.
Client: Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue
Release Date: 2010-03-19

Loxahatchee, FL -- March 20, 2010 -- On March 16th, the calls started coming in regarding racehorses that were in trouble. When Calder Race Course received the call, Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue's Florida Thoroughbred Rehab & Placement (FTRP) was immediately contacted. Upon discovering that one of the horses had raced at Calder, the FHBPA advised FTRP to try and get the horse.

Barbie Moline, long-time racing enthusiast and horse welfare advocate said, “This is exactly why this program was established, to keep the horses safe after their career has ended. I am thankful that Calder Race Course and the FHBPA were so quick to act on this situation.”

The horses were at a facility owned by Brenda Hemphill in Maine. On March 8, the Boston Globe released an article regarding the Hemphill’s facility in which Brenda Hemphill admitted she is a killbuyer. Brad Gaver, cofounder of Pure Thoughts, called Ms. Hemphill who said the horses were camp horses that had been there.

"Knowing that one of the thoroughbreds had just turned three, had raced last summer and that the horses arrived in the last 10 days, the story did not add up," said Brad.

Pure Thoughts' FTRP was able to purchase three thoroughbreds, but the cost was extreme.

“She knew who we were and what we wanted, so we knew she would put us through the ringer," said Jennifer Swanson, cofounder of Pure Thoughts. "Derby Trefaire, a nine year old gelding, who last raced at Suffolk Downs was purchased for $850. Heaven’s Host, a three year old filly, who last raced at Calder Race Course was purchased for $1300, and Ilithyia, a three year old filly, who is un-raced and the daughter of well-known stallion Siphon was purchased for $1300. We could not leave Ilithyia, as we have her half-brother Siphon City.”

In addition to Hemphill’s facility, Crowley’s auction in Massachusetts is now a hot spot for ex-racehorses. New Holland and Sugarcreek have many people now watching for racehorses since so many tracks have instituted a “no tolerance” policy where slaughter is concerned, but no one is checking out Crowley’s and the majority of attendees are kill buyers.

All three horses arrived yesterday at New England Equine Clinic. The horses are not in good condition, with elevated fibrinogen, white blood cell count and respiratory problems. These horses were certainly not being ridden nor were they camp horses. They were not receiving any vet care and they are very ill. It is obvious these horses were going to slaughter. The PRC Panel results will not be back until Monday, and the horses must stay in isolation.

As a result of the horses' deteriorated condition, the vet bill will be more than double what was expected and the horses lost their free ride to FTRP in Florida because they will not be able to leave on Monday when the trailer was leaving. FTRP is in immediate need of contributions to help these horses.

The story of these horses and a donation form are available at Donations can also be made directly to New England Equine Clinic. If anyone has a trailer coming down to Florida from the New England area please contact Jennifer at 561-254-0415. Contributions can also be mailed to Pure Thoughts Horse Rescue at 19181 Capet Creek, Loxahatchee, FL 33470.
