Todd Flettrich and Otto Debut New Freestyle at Winter Equestrian Festival Dressage Classic

Written by: Lauren Fisher
Client: Todd Flettrich
Release Date: 2010-03-22

Wellington, FL – March 22, 2010 – Todd Flettrich had a great weekend competing at the 2010 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival’s CDI3* Dressage Classic, earning the distinction of top placing American rider for the weekend’s FEI classes with second place finishes in both the FEI Grand Prix and FEI Grand Prix Freestyle. Flettrich rode Otto, a 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Rambo X Rampal) owned by Cherry Knoll Farm, in the weekend’s competition.

Competing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, Flettrich and Otto scored a 68.723% for a second place finish in Thursday’s FEI Grand Prix. The pair received a score of 70.426% from the judge at ‘E’ Clarke; 70.426% from the Judge at ‘H’ Fore; 68.511% from the judge at ‘C’ Foy; 67.872% from the judge at ‘M’ Christensen; and 66.383% from the judge at ‘B’ Van Daele.

Flettrich and Otto then debuted a brand new freestyle and received an overall score of 73.000% to take second place honors in Friday night’s Grand Prix Freestyle under the lights. The pair received a score of 72.500% from the judge at ‘E’ Fore; 72.000% from the judge at ‘H’ Christensen; 74.750% from the judge at ‘C’ Clarke; 72.000% from the judge at ‘M’ Foy; and 73.750% from the judge at ‘B’ Van Daele.

Flettrich, of Coatesville, PA, was very happy with the competition and enjoyed the show, commenting, “It was definitely a good weekend. It was a great show, the atmosphere was great, and Otto was really super.”

On the first day of competition, Flettrich and Otto had a beautiful Grand Prix test and received two scores in the 70th percentile from the judges. Despite a slight bobble at the end of the two-tempis, Flettrich thought they had a very good test and explained that he tried to go for a little more expression in the changes.

“I basically thought it was a super test. I would say that the judges that have seen me and judged me already were higher because they know what we are capable of, but we received positive comments from all of the judges,” Flettrich stated. “The judges that gave me 70% also gave me nines for the piaffe and were confident enough to give me the higher scores where he was really good. Even though I had the bobble at the end of my twos, I still got scores of six or higher on all of my changes also because the rest of the changes were so good.”

Moving on to Friday night, Flettrich noted that the evening’s performance was the first time that he and Otto had done their freestyle in competition, and the first time that they had entirely run through the routine. “I didn’t school the freestyle at home because we had just completed it and I had been away, so my main concern was to focus on the Grand Prix,” he explained. “I think the new freestyle was a great success. We were not too far from the winning score and I had basically a mistake-free test. Things could always be better, but it was great.”

“I had positive comments from all of the judges about the music and the performance, so it was very rewarding and exciting,” Flettrich added. “The crowd really enjoyed the music and I got a ten in one of my piaffes, which is pretty awesome. I got almost a 75% from one of the judges and the lowest score was a 72%. It is in my grasp. I definitely feel that we have been consistently getting better and the scores have continued going up.”

Todd Flettrich is based in Wellington, FL, has earned his USDF Silver and Gold Medals, and is a graduate of the USDF ‘L’ Judge Program. Flettrich competed at the North American Young Riders Championships (NAYRC) four times and won the Individual Gold Medal and Team Silver in 1991. Flettrich served as Region 1 Coach and Chef d’Equipe at NAYRC from 1988 through 1994. His student Catherine Malone won the Individual Gold in 2005. Flettrich’s current mounts are owned by Cherry Knoll Farm. For more information, call Todd Flettrich at 484-459-2749.
