Cherry Knoll Farm's Sandlot Takes Pre-Green Championship With Katie Cooper Three Weeks Straight

Written by: Kendall Bierer
Client: Cherry Knoll Farm
Release Date: 2013-02-22

Wellington, FL – February 22, 2013 – The Gulf Coast National II saw nothing but success from the talented chestnut Warmblood, Sandlot, last week in Gulfport, MS. The 6-year-old gelding, owned by Margaret Duprey’s Cherry Knoll Farm, Inc., rode to the top of the leader board in the Pre-Green Hunters for the second consecutive week. With Katie Cooper carefully piloting the young mount, the duo took the championship with ease during the Gulf Coast Magnolia III, as well.

Earlier in the series, Sandlot was named the Gulf Coast Premier I Pre-Green Hunter Champion, outshining his competition with beautiful rounds. It is hard to believe that Cooper has hardly competed with the gelding outside of their local shows along the Eastern Coast. They have been working together since the spring of 2012, with Cooper training the chestnut out of Caves Farm in Owings Mills, MD.

Although Gulfport offered a change of scenery for the pair, nothing stood in their way as they once again earned the judges’ nod for their immaculate hunter rounds. Cooper navigated Sandlot to two blue ribbons and the third place award over fences, also snatching the fourth place during the under saddle. They also picked up the second place honors in the Adequan Pre-Green Classic. Cooper could not have been more proud, as they were presented with the championship tricolor for their second consecutive week.

“The biggest challenge we faced was that we were faced with very poor weather—a lot of rain—we were trying to decide if we were even still going to show,” Cooper explained. “He really didn’t care at all, and probably jumped the best he has ever jumped. The weather didn’t faze him one bit.”

The pair rode to the championship during the Gulf Coast Magnolia III with top ribbons throughout the division. Cooper guided Sandlot to the first place ribbon and two seconds place ribbons in the Pre-Green 3’3” Hunter division. They were dually awarded for their efforts in the under saddle, riding to the second place ribbon. For the third consecutive week, they stood posed for the presentation photograph.

Cooper concluded, “He has really become so consistent, and we are getting to know each other extremely well. It feels so natural to go around, and I am enjoying showing him. He loves his job, he is great, and I am so proud of how far he has come.”

Cooper will continue to compete with the gelding through Gulf Coast, and hopes to reach their ultimate goal of showing in Kentucky in the spring and summer. If their record continues to stay as consistent and strong as this past week, there is no doubt that they will prove themselves unstoppable.
