Fredrick and Kelsey Thatcher Tough to Beat in the Amateur Owners at Showplace Productions Spring Spectacular II

Written by: Brenda Mueller
Client: Lamplight Equestrian Center
Release Date: 2013-06-18

Wayne, IL – June 16, 2013 – Fredrick and Kelsey Thatcher were tough to beat in the 3’6” Amateur Owner Division at Showplace Productions’ Spring Spectacular II held at Lamplight Equestrian Center.  Thatcher won three out of the five Amateur Owner classes and landed a score of 87 in the first round of the $2,500 Amateur Owner Classic.  Completing the second round over Skip Bailey’s derby type jumps, Thatcher, Bluffdale, UT, scored a 79 for a total of 166 and clinched the win.  Shannon Kelly, of Chicago, and Trust Me tried to catch up with a first round score of 83, a second round score of 78.5 for a total of 161.5 for second place. Kelly and Trust Me won the classic last week.

Thatcher is a student at the University of Georgia studying Early Childhood Education and rides with Our Day Farm, Elgin, IL.  Her Pony Lane Farm mount, Fredrick, also earned the Jeff Katz Grand Hunter Challenge Perpetual Trophy as the high point hunter.

“He’s great!” said Thatcher. “He’s a blast to ride and I’m very lucky to have the chance to ride him.”

Reserve Champion in the 3’6” Amateur Owners went to Alliy Moyer, of Carmel, IN, and her mount Carlson. Moyer picked up the two classes Thatcher did not win.  Moyer earned the Style Award for the Leading Amateur Owner Rider and her other mount, Safari, earned honors as the Best Turned Out Amateur Owner Horse.  Safari with trainer, Tammy Provost, also won the USHJA International Hunter Derby earlier in the week.

Moyer took a year off from school but will be a freshman at the University of Indiana studying Environmental Science in the fall.

“I’ve been in London on vacation,” Moyer said, “but it’s great to be back. It took me a bit to get back into the swing of things but I couldn’t have asked for it to be better.”

Also winning three out of the five Amateur Owner classes to be Champion in the 3’3” section was Margaret O’Meara and Casino, an 11-year-old Holsteiner.  Reserve Champion went to Silas Jaramillo, of Sun Prairie, WI and The Advocate.  The Advocate is a 14 year old trakehner/thoroughbred out of Abdullah.

It was Hunter Holloway who stole the Small Junior Hunter division for the second week of Spring Spectacular.  Holloway’s mount Lyons Creek Bellini was Champion and her second ride, Chianti’s Dream, was Reserve.  Holloway was second in the $2,500 Junior Hunter Classic on Chianti with an 83 and an 86 for a 169.  Bellini was third with 81 and an 87 totaling 168.

Edging Holloway out by just a half point was Madison Edwards, and Last Wish, who scored an 85 and an 84.5 for a total of 169.5, taking the lead in the classic.

“I was hoping to have a good day today,” said Edwards. “We’ve been here two weeks and we’re tired so we just wanted to finish strong. The second round started with an oxer, which was difficult, and choosing the oxer or vertical for the option was difficult for me too. The first thing I was thinking about was getting my pace and once I got that I knew I was OK.”

Edwards, 16, of Lake Forest, IL, has had “Carlos” a year and a half and hopes to qualify the nine-year-old gelding for indoors.

It was Holloway again who couldn’t be beat in the Large Junior Hunters 15 and under with her horse, Cascina as they won two classes including the handy round.  Holloway’s other ride, Elliott was also in the top ribbons but it was Brooke Saltzman’s Ariano who edged them out for the Reserve. Holloway, 15 of Topeka, KS, also earned the Best Junior Hunter Rider Award and the Junior Hunter Style Award for the Showplace Spectacular Series.

In the Junior Hunters 16-17, Maddie Thatcher and Summer Place took the Championship and Madison Edward’s Last Wish was Reserve.

Showplace Productions’ Spring Spectacular II wrapped up with the $30,000 Barrington Saddlery Grand Prix and VIP party. Fabulous weather and amazing staff made the show at Lamplight Equestrian Center, one for exhibitors to remember.
