$50,000 Alltech Puissance Class Returns to Alltech National Horse Show

Written by: Christian Palmer
Client: National Horse Show
Release Date: 2013-07-11

The Alltech National Horse Show returns to the Alltech Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 29 through November 3, 2013.

The schedule features a wide array of exciting, big money Open Jumper classes, attracting the best show jumpers from around the world. The featured event is Saturday night’s $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix.

No class though, offers more excitement than the $50,000 Alltech Puissance class which was added to the schedule for the first time last year and returns again this year on Friday night in Lexington.

The Puissance is an exciting test of a show jumper’s courage and ability to jump huge jumps, specifically the big wall.  The competition involves a maximum of five rounds, an opening round followed by four jump-offs where there are only two obstacles—a spread fence and the big wall. The current indoor record is held by German rider Franke Sloothaak, who in June 1991 jumped 7 feet 10 inches in Belgium on Optiebeurs Golo. Last year, Great Britain’s Tim Gredley was the winner, clearing the big Alltech wall at 7’ tall and then after securing victory, thrilling the huge crowd with an attempt at 7’6” on Unex Valente. Jessica Springsteen finished second last year.

“Puissance is an exhilarating display of power and performance in jumping,” said Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech when the class was introduced last year. “It is a tremendously exciting spectator event, a ‘wow’ event that brings equestrians and the general public alike to the edge of their seats. It is a great way to add an extra spark to an already thrilling horse show.”

“We knew the Puissance was going to be a crowd favorite,” said Mason Phelps, Jr., President of the National Horse Show Association. “But we had no idea it was going to be as exciting as it was last year! Tim Gredley of Great Britain really thrilled the crowd that night with an attempt at the wall set at 7’6”. There’s no doubt that this year’s class will offer the same thrills and chills. With the Puissance and the addition of the American Saddlebreds, we’ve really created a number of exciting nights at the show,” Phelps said.

More than 560 horses and 350 riders from nine countries, including nine Olympic veterans competed at the Alltech National Horse Show last year.
