Lexington Visitors Center Hosts Reception for Alltech National Horse Show

Written by: Christian Palmer
Client: National Horse Show
Release Date: 2013-07-29

Lexington, KY – July 29, 2013 –More than 70 guests enjoyed an invitation-only cocktail reception held at the Lexington Visitors Center on July 23 in honor of the 2013 Alltech National Horse Show. The show, held at the Alltech Arena in the Kentucky Horse Park, will run from Oct. 29 – Nov.3, 2013.

“It was a great cast of characters who drive markets, not just in the horse business either,” Gina Greathouse, Senior Vice President of Economic Development of Commerce Lexington, said of the party-goers. “The economic activity that the Alltech National Horse Show generates at the Kentucky Horse Park for our community is a great reflection of what we do at Commerce Lexington to collaborate with contributing partners.”

At the reception, held in association with Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, Commerce Lexington, The Grayson Jockey-Club Research Foundation and Phelps Media Group, upcoming attractions for the Alltech National Horse Show were discussed, including the $850,000 total prize money. Guests networked, made new connections and refreshed old friendships. Stories were shared and new opportunities were explored. Civic, business and academic leaders, along with horse people from many disciplines and practices in and around Lexington were welcomed by the event’s organizers.

Dr. Pearse Lyons, Founder and President of Alltech, a global leader in the animal health and nutrition industry and title sponsor of the Alltech National Horse Show, addressed the attendees. “We brought the National Horse Show to Kentucky: Let’s bring Kentucky to the Alltech National Horse Show!” he said.

Mason Phelps Jr, the 21st President of the National Horse Show Association was also there to greet guests. “We continue to build on the past two years of partnership with the local community and Kentucky,” he said. “This years’ show will be the best yet!”  Phelps then introduced the legendary designer, M. Douglas Mutch of Gracie Street Interior Design of Wellington, FL, who designs and creates Gracie Street Garden and hosts the popular nightly parties during the show.

“As always, the décor will mirror the 132 years of tradition of the longest running indoor horse show on the North American Continent,” Mutch said.

Other dignitaries included George Tauber who serves on the Gentlemen’s Committee of the National Horse Show Association. “The total economic impact of the horse industry in the United States is over $112 Billion annually,” he said. “There are some 2,800 horse shows in the United States, but only one ‘National’ with five stars, and the signature event, the American Society for Prevention and Cruelty of Animals (ASPCA) Alfred B. Maclay Finals. We feel honored to be in Kentucky.”

This year's world-class show jumping will offer nearly $850,000 in total prize money, including a huge Open Jumper division. The International and Open Jumpers will feature $500,000 in total prize money, including the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix, designated a CSI-W 5*, an all-important FEI East Coast League World Cup qualifying event. In the Junior and Amateur Owner Jumpers Division, there will be $100,000 in prize money, and $200,000 in prize money will be offered in the AA rated Hunter Division.  In 2011, the Alltech National Horse Show hosted more that 560 horses and 350 riders from nine countries. In 2012 the popularity of the show skyrocketed entries, so much so that horses and riders were wait listed.
