Taylor Takes Top Honors at Region 8 ASPCA Maclay Qualifier, Linders Wins Central Qualifier, Tredennick Captures Region 6

Greenvale, NY- September 22- Three more qualifiers for the 2005 ASPCA Maclay National Championships were held this past weekend. The Region 8 qualifier was held at the Oaks Blenheim Fall Tournament in San Juan Capistrano, California. Region 8 brings riders together from California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Region 6 hosted riders from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah at their qualifier during the High Prairie Fall Classic in Parker, Colorado. Region 5 consists of twelve Central states and had their qualifier at the St. Louis National Charity in St. Louis, Missouri.

The ASPCA Maclay class has been held since 1933, and its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992.

The top riders from each regional qualifier may advance to the National Championship, which is held this year at the Syracuse Invitational Sporthorse Tournament on November 2-6, 2005 and is produced by the National Horse Show Association.

The present plan in Syracuse is to hold the warm up for the ASPCA Maclay on Saturday morning and the first two phases of the Maclay on Sunday morning. The Maclay competitors will then be able to observe the international finale to the Syracuse Tournament-–the uniquely formatted Syracuse Cup and the Beacon Hill $35,000 Junior/Amateur Grand Prix. Following that, the third, or testing, phase will be held as the feature and closing event of the session.

The winner of the Region 8 qualifier was Katie Taylor from Tarzana, CA. Taylor trains with Kost and Jenny Karazissis of Far West Farm. Taylor is 18 years old, but she shows as a 17 year old. She has qualified for the Maclay National Championships twice before, however; this year is the best finish in a qualifier for her.

Taylor rode her own horse Majesty in the qualifier and was thrilled with his performance. The ASPCA Maclay regional was his first show back from colic surgery, and he was in top form.

Taylor’s main focus for the fall is planning for college. She will attend Chapman University, which is located in Orange County, CA. Although she did not initially have plans of attending the finals in Syracuse, NY, her trainer Jenny Karazissis admitted, “After her victory, it feels like a sign that we should go.” It will be the first time that Taylor has shown in Syracuse.
