The Asbury Classic Offers an Array of Highlight Classes For All Experience Levels!

Written by: Kendall Bierer
Client: The Ridge Farm
Release Date: 2013-09-16

Asbury, NJ – September 16, 2013 – The Asbury Classic is swiftly approaching, and the anticipation is tangible as the entries continue to roll in. With only four days until this pristine event gets underway, competitors and spectators are beginning to look forward to a thrilling competition. Week I of the Asbury Classic will host the $15,000 Ridge at Riverview Grand Prix  the $2,000 Futures Grand Prix, and the $2,000 Asbury Hunter Derby. The Classic is one of the most charming shows in the nation, and will return September 19-22 for Week I and October 10-13, 2013 for Week II to the Ridge at Riverview in Asbury, NJ. The prize list and entry blank are posted at Post entries will be accepted.

The Ridge at Riverview is run by Olympian Nona Garson, and her partner, George D’Ambrosio, and is a jewel to the city of Asbury with rolling open fields, a large Grand Prix Ring, Hunter Ring and a Derby Field with natural obstacles truly reminiscent of the traditional hunt field. The grounds have both grass and sand mixed with all-weather footing. Steve Rivets, Kerry O’Conner, Barry Lobel, Nancy Hall and Karen Marsh will return to the Ridge at Riverview as the 2013 judges.

The $15,000 Ridge at Riverview Grand Prix, sponsored by B.W. Furlong and Associates, is the highlight event of the show, and is set to take place this Sunday, September 22. Spectators will line the open Grand Prix Ring as they watch the top riders compete in a battle of the best to secure the winning time. The Asbury Classic also offers a smaller, $2,000 Futures Grand Prix held on the beautiful Derby field, sponsored by the D’Ambrosio Art Studio, which caters to the less experienced horse and rider combinations.

Ken Berkley, a seasoned competitor in both hunter and jumper rings who runs River’s Edge in Flemington, NJ, along with top professional hunter rider Scott Stewart, remarked about the 2012 Asbury Classic, “This show is awesome. I arrived to a happy, upbeat atmosphere and the footing in the jumper ring was as good as anywhere in the country. The ring is huge, a perfect size to gallop!”

The ever popular $2,000 Asbury Hunter Derby is sure to be a thrilling event as the hunter riders gather at the open grass field to showcase their horses in front of the judges’ scrutinizing eyes. Last year is was BJ Ehrhardt and Woodrow who rode to the top of the leader board with beautiful flowing rounds, utilizing the open grass field to the best of their ability, catching the judges’ eyes with their traditional hunter athleticism and style. The competition is sure to be fierce as the Ehrhardt is sure to return to defend her championship title, while other derby riders attempt to take over the lead.

The Itty Bitty Mini Prix will return to the Asbury Classic for its second year. Last year, it was a huge hit with a large field of entrants. Melissa Lacamera and Silver Lining blew spectators away with their speedy round. The managers of the Asbury Classic are pleased to have it return to the show, and each classic winner will receive embroidered scrims as a personalized present. The Ridge has also added another very exciting classic to this year’s lineup of events, The Short / Long Stirrup Hunter Classic – open to short stirrup and beginner riders for their chance to compete for a beautiful cooler and big ribbons!

Olympic Silver Medalist, Peter Leone stated, “What an unexpected pleasure to compete at the Asbury Classic. I felt like I was at a country show, like the ones I attended when I was a boy, except the facility is at today’s evolved competition standards. The show offered friendly management, and lots of prizes: trophies, grooming boxes, coolers, and certificates, not like most of today’s shows where all you win is a ribbon and a check.”

From Mini Stirrup to the Grand Prix, a good time is sure to be had by all.

The Asbury Classic will commence every morning with a hot cup of coffee and a selection of Danishes beneath the Hospitality Tent. Exhibitors will have the luxury of enjoying the wonderful view of the show grounds while munching on their morning pastries, and looking forward to what the afternoon will bring.

Throughout the day, the Hospitality Tent will be stocked with snacks, bottled water and replenishing amenities for the exhibitors. In the afternoon, wine and cheese will become the highlight of those living the high life.  Exhibitors will be able to wind down and relax as they enjoy a delicious pinot noir or crisp chardonnay.

Although the Hospitality Tent offers amenities that are unparalleled, the horses are not without a little spoiling, either. At each in gate, the horses will be rewarded for their efforts not only with the coveted ribbons, but also a well-deserved peppermint.

Entries for the Asbury Classic Week I (September 19-22) close September 12, 2013 and the Week II (October 10-13) will close October 3, 2013. The time is drawing close to the first week of competition, please fax all entries to 908-479-6158 or mail to:
