Georgina Bloomberg and Action Win Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic at Harrisburg, Bloomberg Named Best Amateur-Owner Jumper Rider

Harrisburg, PA- October 22- Georgina Bloomberg, one of the nation’s hottest young equestrian stars, was the winner of the $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic presented by the American Grand Prix Association, which was held Friday afternoon on October 21. She and Action, owned by Gotham Enterprizes Inc., were also named Amateur Owner Jumper Champions at this year’s Pennsylvania National Horse Show. The show, one of the key stops on the "fall equestrian tour," is held at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

This marked Bloomberg’s first win in the Amateur Owner Jumpers at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show following a stellar junior career. She finished fifth and seventh in the Amateur-Owner Jumpers in 2004 and was second and third in 2003.

The Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic had 26 entries in it, but only three managed to clear the opening course set by course designer Conrad Homfeld. The clear winner at the end of the jump-off was 22 year old Georgina Bloomberg of New York City and her blazing fast horse Action, owned by Gotham Enterprizes Inc.

After the first horse in the jump-off had 16 faults, Cara Raether and Pedro were the next to test the course. They had good turns in the air and Pedro looked sharp and responsive. They blasted around the course clear in a time of 37.092 seconds. Bloomberg had to come in clear and fast to win.

She and Action were quick from the start. They turned in the air and skimmed over the jumps. They made the long run to the last jump, left it up, and finished clear with a time of 35.213 seconds, almost two seconds faster than Raether.

Bloomberg rode her old friend Action, who she has been together with for six years now. “I’ve been with him longer than any other horse,” she revealed. “He’s my favorite horse. He has the most personality. I know him better than any other horse. I enjoy riding him because he tries his best, no matter what. He is honest, and what you see is what you get.”

Bloomberg has also made the decision that when Action does not feel like showing anymore, she will not do the Amateur Jumpers any more. “But it doesn’t look like there is any end in sight!” she said with a laugh. “He keeps going and never goes lame, knock on wood.”

At Indoors, Bloomberg felt that she usually has an advantage with her amateur horses, which are smaller, typey, and fast. “They have short strides, but they can turn on a dime and can cut turns that a bigger horse would have trouble with,” she explained. “Yesterday, I knew straight off the bat that I wouldn’t win. Today, there were a few more turning options, but again, it was more of a galloping course. I had to really go for it.”

When Bloomberg saw Raether do eight strides to the last jump, she had to make a decision. “Usually, I wouldn’t take shots with him in leaving strides out; I would take shots in making a short turn. There weren’t that many options here that I could do that,” she clarified. “I knew that if I wanted to win, I had to take a stride out and take a shot at it.”

Bloomberg also knew that she had to watch Action at the last jump, so that he was not too flat and did not have a rail. “He almost invites you to go too fast. That’s a trap I used to fall in when I first got him. I’d just tear it up and tear the jumps down too. I knew I had to be fast, but really keep it together,” she said.

Bloomberg showed at Harrisburg only one month after a fall re-broke her collarbone. “I started riding ten days after I broke it,” she confirmed. “The collarbone is really, really good- much better than I thought it would be. I’m giving it a couple weeks before I really start going back to totally normal.”

In addition to the win in the big $10,000 class, Bloomberg and Action were also named Amateur-Owner Jumper division champions. For her outstanding performance at Harrisburg, Bloomberg was named the Leading Rider for the Amateur-Owner Jumper Section and was awarded The E. Corbett Rider Memorial Perpetual Trophy.

Bloomberg can be seen in action again this week (October 25-30) at the Washington International Horse Show at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C. She will then compete at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on November 7-13, and the 122nd National Horse Show and Family Festival in Wellington, Florida on November 30-December 4.
