The Derby at Genesee Country Village & Museum to Benefit Rochester Women’s Giving Circle

The Derby’s Support Allows for Largest RWGC Grant to Date!

Mumford, NY – January 28, 2014 – The Derby at The Genesee Country Village & Museum will provide spectators and riders alike with an extraordinary event from June 7 – 8, 2014, but the lasting, positive impact of The Derby at GVC&M will stretch well beyond those two days.

The Derby at GCV&M, which features a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby and a $35,000 USHJA International Derby, has named the Rochester Women’s Giving Circle (RWGC) as the beneficiary of this year’s inaugural event. The unprecedented support from The Derby at GCV&M will enable the RWGC to make a significant grant that could change the lives of women and girls it will serve.

“One of our head teammates here at The Derby, Kelly Olzack is a member of the Giving Circle,” show organizer and producer Brian Brown said. “It’s an incredible charity. They track 100 percent of the money that comes through their organization, and it all stays locally in Western New York. With so many charities, you don’t know where the money goes. This one is close to home, and we know where the money is going and where it is staying.”

The RWGC is a community of philanthropic women in Rochester, NY, who combine their charitable giving to fund programs for women and girls that provide them the skills, education or training that helps them earn a living wage.

“The gift that we receive from The Derby is going to enable us, the Giving Circle, to take our grant giving to a new level,” said RWGC co-founder Shirley King. “That new level means that we will give a grant of $50,000 to $75,000 in 2015 that will fund a new venture for an organization providing critical services for women and girls, helping them to achieve economic self-sufficiency.”

The transformational grant toward which The Derby at GCV&M funds will be directed will mark the largest grant that the RWGC has given to date. The grant will be more than double the previous all-time high grant of $22,000, awarded in 2013.

“The money coming from The Derby really helps us make this move,” King said. “It was a significant part of our decision making.  This takes us to a new level and we are very excited.”

The Giving Circle began when a group of philanthropic women decided to pool their charitable donations together in an effort to make a meaningful impact on selected organizations. Six years since its founding, the group has grown from 25 members to a membership of over 125 and has currently awarded more than $460,000 in grants. The show will offer a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Sat., June 7 and a $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Sun., June 8 on the beautiful grass Great Field of the Genesee Country Village and Museum.
