David Marcus Swears by Trilogy Saddles

Written by: Kendall Bierer
Client: Polo Gear USA
Release Date: 2014-02-21

Wellington, FL – February 21, 2014 – Olympian David Marcus has everything it takes to be the dressage champion that he is – the talent, the position, the horses. Yet, three years ago when Debbie Witty of Performance Saddlery met Marcus at Dressage at Devon, he was missing one key thing – a well-fitting saddle that he loved. Today, Marcus has found that perfect fit in Trilogy saddles.

“I had always admired his presence as a rider,” Witty said of Marcus. “He has a gorgeous position on a horse. I was at Dressage at Devon, and I could not resist so I asked him what his favorite saddle was. David said that he really never had found a saddle that he loved. I said that if the opportunity ever presented itself it would be fun to have him ride in Trilogy, and David very politely said that he would like that.”

Two years went by before anything came of their conversation, but then Witty’s phone rang.

“David told me that he would like to try all three models on Don Kontes to see how they felt, and he was confident that within minutes he would be able to tell whether they worked for him not,” Witty said. “David took a generous amount of time in each saddle model. As he would dismount from each one he would say that he liked it, and he could ride in that model. At the end of the day he chose the Trilogy Amadeo.”

Marcus has ridden in the Trilogy brand ever since. He currently uses a Trilogy saddle on his 2012 Olympic mount Chrevi’s Capital, which speaks volumes for the saddle, as “Capital” can be a sensitive horse to fit.

“Capital is a very particular horse, and it has been hard to find a saddle in which he is comfortable,” Marcus said. “I think it’s a real credit to Debbie that she was able to get a saddle to fit on him because he’s extremely sensitive. Now all of my top horses are in training with Trilogy and have been for quite some time, and I’m very pleased with the results.”

Marcus continued, “I think one of the reasons Capital is happy, as with my other horses, is that there is a lot of saddle within the Trilogy design. It gives you a lot of flexibility in how you can fit them. In some of the other brands, where there is less paneling, there is in turn less flexibility for fit. Trilogy Saddles really contour to the shoulder because of the amount of saddle to play with.”

Trilogy Saddles are unparalleled in the show world, responding to the demand in the market place for a saddle line that addressed both the horse and rider needs. Trilogy Saddles are built in England by some of the most experienced craftsmen in the world. They feature a British tree made of laminated Beechwood and a specially tanned hide from England that offers the rider an elastic, broken-in feel.

According to Marcus, the high-quality and well-crafted design of the Trilogy Amadeo has had a noticeable, positive impact on Capital’s performance. “You can feel the difference in his performance, especially because he has a lot of shoulder freedom,” Marcus said. “I didn’t feel as close and connected to Capital in other saddles. The Trilogy Amadeo has a soft, deep seat which allows me to feel as though I am one with my horse.”

In an effort to consistently maintain their mission to provide comfort for both horse and rider alike, Performance Saddlery, maker of the Trilogy line, has trained and continues to support their 20 national saddle fitters and companies across the nation. Each of the representatives is the epitome of passion, focus and drive. They have committed to achieving the enhanced performance for which Performance Saddlery has become known.

Performance Saddlery has expanded its performance and fit options with the addition of the Verhan Saddlery line and the patented “Free Shoulder Panel and Saddle.”

Witty explained, “The free shoulder saddle is providing us with a revolutionary new fitting option. It is a different type of saddle, which allows us to offer our customers a choice. Both Trilogy and Verhan have a strong following, and having our fitters able to offer our customers the choice allows us to be of better service to them.”

Witty continued, “Our fitting expertise is expanding the Verhan appeal. Trilogy is bringing its experience of fitting world-class dressage riders to show jumping. Todd Minikus has been terrific to work with! Todd developed the original Verhan jumping saddle and was instrumental in the free shoulder evolution. He has been instrumental in assisting us as we refine the techniques we have developed for dressage and apply them to show jumping.”

In addition to Performance Saddlery and their team of expert saddle fitters, Polo Gear Team Shop continues to produce unparalleled custom embroidered and embellished products for all disciplines. Their unrivaled craftsmanship has become a specialty of the completely in house facility of Polo Gear.

Polo Gear CEO, Gary Fellers comments, “It is so rewarding to see this group of incredibly talented, devoted riders, rallying and working with Debbie. She has such a way of encouraging and getting input from the riders. Despite their very demanding time schedules, they always make time for her. She really engages them in the process, and they have become real partners in the development and improvement of our products. It is exceptionally interesting to see how good ideas from one discipline are translating to the other.”

Performance Saddlery plans to continually and selectively grow its saddle fitting force throughout the United States and Canada, as well as throughout the international markets. Equestrians with horse or rider saddle issues are encouraged to call Performance Saddlery at 800-258-0006 or e-mail us at for a consultation.
