Wellington, FL – March 11, 2014 – Mark your calendars today for the Ridge at Wellington’s final 2014 Hunter Derby Day! The Ridge at Wellington gives a new meaning to “TGIF” when their $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby take center stage at the Ridge at Wellington on Friday, March 21, 2014. Entries are filling fast as the top hunter riders in the nation gather for a battle of the best on the turf. Part of the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour, the International and National Hunter Derbies are the perfect fit into the Wellington Winter Circuit as riders prepare for the steadily approaching hunter derby at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF). Entries and stabling information must be submitted no later than Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 5 p.m.

The derbies are only a little over a week away, offering the convenience of a standalone derby while maintaining the open in-gate format for which the Wellington Turf Tour has grown popular. On March 21, 2014, the turf at the Ridge at Wellington will transform into a picturesque hunt field, reminiscent of the traditional hunt fields of the past. Shrubbery, flowers and natural obstacles will fill the open field as the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby kicks off the day in the grass field at 8 a.m., while the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby is set to start at 12:30 p.m.

Rob Carey will design the hunter derby courses at the Ridge of Wellington, testing both horse and rider alike as they take on the obstacles. Dee Thomas, Linda Andrisani, Jimmy Toon and Ron Smith will judge the final derbies for the Ridge at Wellington Hunter Derby Days.

The top riders from across the nation gathered at the Ridge at Wellington for the inaugural Hunter Derby Days in February. Under sunny skies and beautiful featured derby sensation Jersey Boy with Jennifer Alfano in the saddle riding to the top of the ranks. Besting a field of top-tier competitors, Alfano and Jersey Boy led the field from start to finish. Havens Schatt and Just Fred took the second place, while Kelley Farmer and Unspoken rode to the third. Earlier in the day Keri Kampsen and Silhouette took home the victory in $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby.

The $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby is scheduled to run beginning at 8 a.m. and will take place on The Ridge at Wellington’s beautiful derby field. After the top 12 return for the handy round at 11 a.m., the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby will commence at 12:30 p.m. on the turf, as well. The second round of the International Hunter Derby will begin at 3 p.m. The Ridge at Wellington will continue to utilize its open in gate format for the first round of each derby, while the second round will have riders return in reverse order.

The $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby will run on the grass field in accordance with the USEF and USHJA specifications. Fence heights will range from 3’6” to 4’3” for the International Hunter Derby, while the fence heights will range from 3’ to 3’5” for the USHJA National Hunter Derby. The first round will be a Classic Style Hunter Round, and the second round being a Handy Hunter Round. Riders will have the opportunity to score points for options, as well as handiness. International Hunter Derby competitors need to check in 24 hours prior to the start of competition, and each horse will be stabled at The Ridge at Wellington throughout the duration of the competition. Stabling is limited. Entries and stabling information will be processed in the order in which it is received. Complete specifications and information on the USHJA International Hunter Derby Program will be available in the show office and at www.USHJA.org.
