HSBA and PoloGear® Host Free Family Fun and Fast Paced Barrel Racing Saturday at Polo West

Written by: Mary Adelaide Brakenridge
Client: Horse Show By Appointment
Release Date: 2014-06-27

Wellington, FL – June 27, 2014 – Western returns to Wellington on Saturday with the second of five free exhibition events hosted by Horse Show By Appointment (HSBA, formerly SBA) and PoloGear®. After a highly successful opening exhibition in May featuring Western dressage and reining, the team is back to present the fast-paced sport of barrel racing. Join the fun and cheer on dozens of competitors of all ages as they race for the quickest time around the barrels!

The event, supported by title sponsors WestWind Surfaces and Engel & Völkers Wellington, begins at 6 p.m. with a meet and greet and casual socializing ringside at the Polo West lighted arena. The barrel racing exhibition kicks off at 7 p.m. with an intermission featuring a freestyle reined cow horse demonstration by Rick and Trevor Steed of HSBA and Steed Training. An after party follows from 9-11 p.m.

Admission is free, so bring the whole family, and don’t forget your cowboy boots and hat. A delicious country barbecue dinner and beverages are available for purchase throughout the evening. Step inside for a full bar, a DJ and dancing, and a fashion show presented and sponsored by JC Western Wear.

Keep an eye out for the Polo West Pony Express: Rick and Trevor Steed led HSBA riders in hand delivering invitations from horseback yesterday and will continue today.

“The main intent of Western to Wellington is to bring the Western discipline back home and do everything we can to bring business to Wellington on a 12-month basis,” Tom DiRocco of HSBA said. “We are doing something we love to do, for the benefit of all. The big picture is to truly make Wellington a one-stop capital of the equestrian world with all disciplines.”

HSBA, the popular reined cow horse show association that hosts fun, fair and affordable competitions, is hoping to work in partnership with PoloGear® to bring the $100,000 HSBA Championship Finals to Polo West in Wellington for 2016. WestWind Surfaces is providing top-notch footing for the Polo West arena, which will be a perfect setting for HSBA competitions. HSBA plans to expand beyond its reined cow horse roots and bring its unique approach to other Western disciplines, including barrel racing.

“That arena is a great platform in the heart of Wellington,” DiRocco said. “Due to the gracious offer extended by Gary Fellers and Jeanette Sassoon, the new owners of Polo West who have partnered with HSBA to bring Western to Wellington, we are looking to make Polo West the home of HSBA.”

“The goal is opening the new restaurant on the facilities, which will be family and dog friendly, and guests can sit and watch an event every night of the week,” he added. “We also want to offer the arena up to charities at no cost and assist them in putting on events and raising money.”

If the Western events pique your interest, you can get a taste of what it’s like to be in the saddle with the HSBA Reined Cow Horse Experience. Whether you’re an experienced equestrian or you’ve never been on a horse before, the Steed Training team will guide you through the basics and get you ready to work a cow. By the end of the day, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve accomplished and hooked on the excitement of this addicting sport. Contact Rick Steed at (772) 263-6830 or Tom DiRocco at (561) 371-4997 for more information.

Don’t miss a single one of the Western exhibitions! Each one provides a window into a different discipline. The remaining events in the series will be held on the following dates from 6-9 p.m. with an after party from 9-11 p.m.:

June 28 - Barrel Racing
August 30 - Reined Cow Horse
September 27 - Team Sorting/Herd Work
October 25 - Ranch Horse

About Horse Show By Appointment

Horse Show By Appointment’s fresh approach to reined cow horse competition was an unprecedented success in its first season, and now HSBA is back for a second year. HSBA aims to make showing “Fun, Fair, and Affordable” for competitors.  To accommodate those traveling long distances to show and help busy riders fit showing in at their convenience, HSBA allows riders to reserve their own ride times in advance. This cuts down on usual travel expenses such as stall rentals and hotels and encourages competitors to make the trip and join in the fun.

Each HSBA series includes four shows. Riders who compete at three out of the four shows earn a place in the annual Championship Finals, which offer over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Competitors may also qualify for the Finals in absentia by simply sending in entries and payment to each of the four shows.

Sponsorships are available for HSBA’s 2014 season and Championship Finals. Contact Mary Adelaide Brakenridge at for more information.
