Todd Flettrich, Grand Prix Dressage Rider/Trainer Engages Crowd During July ShopTalk at ShowChic

Written by: Alexandra Lynch
Client: Cherry Knoll Farm
Release Date: 2014-07-14

Wellington, FL – July 14, 2014- Todd Flettrich of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, and Wellington, Florida, brought thoughtful direction to up and coming dressage riders during ShopTalk at ShowChic on July 8, 2014.  From training the foremost dressage competitors to becoming an Olympic contender, the event led by Flettrich was a much-discussed occasion in Wellington.

The atmosphere at ShowChic was lively as local dressage trainers and riders from all backgrounds were eager to hear the well-known Grand Prix rider share segments of his dressage mastery.  As the crowd began to settle, he started the discussion with a brief background of his experience, and explained his thoughts on the importance of a “team” while working through training.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today as a rider without my team and support system,” Flettrich said.  “When I first started competing at Young Riders, I placed dead last.  It took multiple efforts to finish on top of my level and that movement would have been impossible without my team behind me.”

As the crowd’s vigorous note taking began to slow, Flettrich opened discussion to the rest of the audience for a question and answer segment.  Although the portion was started with a light-hearted question regarding Pilates, the mood quickly became more focused as the questions began to encourage Flettrich to delve into more far-reaching topics of the sport.

One curious audience member asked Flettrich to describe how he dealt with the pressure of moving up the pipeline of dressage.  “My trainers were great to me and acted as my parents at that time by giving me mental support when I needed it,” Flettrich voiced. “My relationship with my horse was of huge importance as well because you may be a good rider, yet you’re only as talented as what’s underneath you.”  On overcoming obstacles along the way, Flettrich was thoughtful about statements he presented to the audience. “You may have support, but you cannot count on other people to get you where you want to go.  You need to fight for your goals and fight for what you believe.  Along the way, I really learned to trust myself.”

The momentum of the conversation was intensifying as the riders in the room were committed to gaining knowledge from Flettrich about dressage training. Another audience member raised the topic of there being great pressure on up and coming riders to travel to Europe for training and to attend as many reputable clinics as possible.

“Although it can be largely beneficial to audit numerous clinics, you should find a trainer to ride with that works for you.  There are many strong riders that ride in completely different ways, however there is consistency within their training,” Flettrich said.

As the conversation drew to a close, it was clear that the response from the participants was overwhelmingly positive.  As one of the top dressage riders in the world, Flettrich provided the room with great knowledge of the sport while allowing a fun and relaxed environment for the riders.
