Join John Blackburn at Manhattan Saddlery for a Book Signing and Conversation

Written by: Carrie Wirth
Client: Blackburn Architects
Release Date: 2014-09-12

New York, NY- September 12, 2014 - John Blackburn, the celebrated equestrian architect with over 160 horse farms to his credit, will visit Manhattan Saddlery in New York on Wednesday, September 17. After a short presentation, Blackburn will sign copies of his book, Healthy Stables by Design, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The always-affable Blackburn welcomes those with questions about barn design, especially on the topics of creating safe and healthy environments for horses and building green and sustainable buildings that are beautiful and make good sense.

Blackburn is also open to sharing conversation with those who are interested in discussing the controversial topic of carriage horses in New York.

“After 30 years designing equine facilities that promote the health and safety of horses and as illustrated in my book, Healthy Stables by Design, I am clearly an advocate for the horse,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn, who is from Washington D.C., owns a time-share in New York and spends significant time in the city. He has offered up pro bono work to draft plans for a city and horse-friendly equestrian center and he understands the challenges of healthy horse-keeping in the city. As a prominent figure and proponent of the well-being of the horse, his perspective is based on the horses.

“There is nothing inhumane about the existence of horse carriages when treated properly and appropriately placed,” said Blackburn. “But just because they are pulling carriages doesn’t mean they should be subjected to a live-or-die-trying situation. My concern is that horses standing for long hours on hard surfaces whether it be on the city streets or in a barn aisle or wash stall is abusive treatment. If these practices are replaced by creating a regulated safe haven for these animals within the safety of Central Park and off of the public streets, then I will be a major supporter.”

Blackburn is a proponent of the preservation and protection of both riding and carriage horses in Central Park and believes in creating a safe and healthy haven for them there.

Mark your calendar and join Blackburn at the historic Manhattan Saddlery next Wednesday. Get your autographed copy of Healthy Stables by Design and enjoy conversation and do a little shopping. All author proceeds from the sale Healthy Stables by Design are donated to equine charities.
