Equestrians turn out to Historic Manhattan Saddlery for John Blackburn Book Signing

Written by: Carrie Wirth
Client: Blackburn Architects
Release Date: 2014-09-25

New York, NY- September 25, 2014 – Manhattan Saddlery hosted John Blackburn, the celebrated equestrian architect, for a book signing and conversation on Sept. 17. Many New York equestrians attended the two and a half-hour event, met Blackburn and discussed the topic of his book, Healthy Stables by Design. Blackburn also welcomed discussion about a topic he feels passionate about; carriage horses in New York.

The setting was the historic Manhattan Saddlery housed in a building traces its history back to 1912, when it opened on 24th street as Miller Harness Company, a saddlery and equine supply business. Miller's catered to equestrian Olympic athletes, New York’s elite families and everyday enthusiasts through its popular mail order catalog for almost 80 years.  In 2002, June Tsang and her family purchased the business as Manhattan Saddlery.

"I'm really impressed with the facility and with the Tsang family's commitment to staying in New York City,” said Blackburn. “They're the last tack shop around and I think they're doing a great job of anchoring the equine heritage to the city, especially right now with all the controversy surrounding the historic carriage horses!"

As a prominent figure and proponent of the well-being of the horse, Blackburn believes that there is a place for carriage horses and riding horses in New York in Central Park off dangerous city streets. He hopes one day to see a healthy and safe haven created there.
