Sandlot Seals Championship During Debut at the McDonogh December Hunter Classic

Written by: Kendall Bierer
Client: Cherry Knoll Farm
Release Date: 2014-12-10

Owings Mills, MD – December 10, 2014 – The stunning chestnut Sandlot made his first debut of the 2014-2015 show year during the McDonogh December Hunter Classic. The talented gelding, owned by Margaret Duprey’s Cherry Knoll Farm, Inc., returned to the show ring after a year away. He captured the top honors, and brought home the First Year Working Hunter Championship with Katie Cooper in the irons.

Sandlot was one of the “horses to watch” when the USHJA introduced their Pre-Green Incentive Program in 2012. Cooper trains out of Caves Farm in Owings Mills, MD, and after a year away from building their tricolor collection, they have returned with a plan to qualify for the Devon Horse Show. If the McDonogh December Hunter Classic is any indication of future success, the pair will have no trouble making their way to the illustrious oval ring.

Last year, Cooper was injured and had to sit out for most of the season. As a mutual decision, Cooper and Duprey decided to work on Sandlot’s consistency and maturity and return to the show ring in late 2014. McDonogh was the perfect place to put their plan to action.

“It is a great venue with wonderful footing, quality of competition and is always beautifully run and decorated,” Cooper said. “Sandlot went right into the ring, and he really did great! In the past, the inclement weather or the decorations would have made him looky, but he was super!”

They were awarded two blue ribbons and the second place over fences, as well as the third place for the under saddle. After such a successful show last weekend, Cooper now packs her bags and loads the tack trunk for The Barracks in Charlottesville, VA.

“Sandlot is a great horse, and I am so lucky to have him,” Cooper smiled. “It is nice to both be back in the action and following a plan. He is a huge talent, and he has the ability to be the best. He has transitioned really well into the First Year division, and I think that this first show was a true test of his maturity, and how far he has come.”

Cooper will continue to compete with the gelding throughout the winter months, and hopes to reach their ultimate goal of qualifying for the 2015 Devon Horse Show. If their record continues to stay as consistent and strong, there is no doubt that they will prove themselves unstoppable.
