Katie Cooper and Sandlot Triumph at Swan Lake Sealing Trifecta of Consecutive Championships

Littlestown, PA – January 11, 2015 – Although Katie Cooper and Sandlot, owned by Margaret Duprey of Cherry Knoll Farm, Inc., were faced with frigid temperatures during the January National Horse Show at Swan Lake, the pair proved unstoppable as they captured their third consecutive championship in three shows. The flashy chestnut gelding caught the eyes of the judges with his consistency and finesse through the courses to win the First Year Green Working Hunter division.

Cooper, who trains out of Caves Farm in Owings Mills, Maryland, was injured last year and had to sit out for most of the season, allowing time for Sandlot to work on his consistency and maturity. They returned this winter with one goal in mind—to make it to the prestigious Devon Horse Show and Country Fair’s Dixon Oval in 2015. After capturing tricolors at the McDonogh Horse Show and The Barracks in December, the January National puts them one step closer to their goal of qualification.

“The high was only 16 degrees,” Cooper described. “It was really, really cold, but Sandlot was as good as he could be. He jumped around and did his job for both days of the show, and was so good. He is becoming so consistent, and even though it wasn’t our best performance, given the scenario, I thought he handled everything very well and still shined out there.”

Cooper could not be more thrilled with their third consecutive championship. They rode to two firsts and one second place finish over fences, as well as the second place in the handy and the third under saddle for the division’s rosette.

“This is three out of three shows, and he has been champion all three times. I am thrilled and very proud of him,” Cooper smiled. “He continues to improve and impress, and his balance throughout the course and especially the two-stride has become so much better with time.”

Sandlot will have a month out of the show ring before traveling to Gulf Port, Mississippi, for the Gulf Coast Winter Series. If their record continues to stay as consistent and strong, there is no doubt that they will prove themselves unstoppable.
