A Day In The Life Of: A Villa Chardonnay Worker

Temecula, CA – January 16, 2015 – Caring for over 200 animals is no small feat, but Monika Kerber, Louise Gardner and Villa Chardonnay’s dedicated ranch hands devote their lives to the compassionate care of these once abused and abandoned creatures. A day in the life of running an animal sanctuary is a daunting task. Join us on this behind-the-scenes journey to get an idea of the daily routine at Villa Chardonnay.

4:30 AM: Monika Kerber is out of bed and takes out all 14 dogs for a morning walk.

5:00 AM: Louise Gardner is out of bed and starts cleaning cat boxes.

5:45 AM: Gardner and Kerber begin feeding all of the indoor animals.

6:30 AM: Antibiotics and bandaging are given to some of the indoor animals.

6:45 AM: Kerber is on the phone with ranch hands to discuss their plan for the day. Ranch hands begin feeding hay and grain to Villa Chardonnay’s 140 horses.

8:00 AM: Horses are inspected for cuts, scratches or unusual behavior.
Water is changed for the horses.

9:00 AM: Ranch hands clean stalls.

10:00 AM: Kerber is outside bandaging and giving medical care to the horses and working with the ranch hands.

11:00 AM: Ranch hands feed second rotation of hay.

12:00 PM: Outdoor paddocks are cleaned by ranch hands. Water is changed for the horses.

3:30 PM: Ranch hands feed last rotation of hay and grain.

4:00 PM: Kerber works on orders for Villa Chardonnay’s online pet supply store.

6:00 PM: Thank you messages are sent to Villa Chardonnay donors and supporters.

6:30 PM: Water is changed for all the horses.

7:30 PM: Gardner works on fundraising for Villa Chardonnay.

8:00 PM: Bandages are changed and antibiotics are given to indoor animals.

9:00 PM: Plans are discussed for medications and supplies for the next day.

10:00 PM: Website updates & marketing  

While this schedule covers the daily tasks at Villa Chardonnay, Kerber also spends a full day once a week helping the farrier and the vet with the animals. Other activities that are worked into the schedule include: ranch tours, working with volunteers, purchasing supplies and feed, networking with individuals and the community to save additional horses.
