Release Date: 2015-01-26

Temecula, CA – January 26, 2015 – As a lifelong animal lover, Monika Kerber has dedicated her entire life to the compassionate care of once abused and abandoned horses. Find out more about the selfless woman that has built Villa Chardonnay from the ground up with this exclusive question and answer.

Talk about where your love for animals and horses got started.

Well, actually I didn’t grow up with any pets at all, but I always loved them. We used to live in the city and I once said that I wanted to save all of the horses in the world, but of course you can’t do that. I even used to take dogs and cats out of the streets, but I was never allowed to bring them home.

Talk about some of your background with animals.

I rescued my first horse from Mexico City and I loved him so much. After he passed away from an unfortunate accident, I said I would never have horses in my life because that really broke my heart, but look at me now.

Give me some of your non-horse background.

I have my MBA and a B.A. Degree in Marketing and Graphic Design background. I am also an entrepreneur and have owned several successful businesses including a small chain of restaurants and a French Bistro. I also worked at G.E. Lighting as a Marketing Manager. To me, the corporate world was great and I really enjoyed it.

When did you know you wanted to open an equine sanctuary?

One day, I was on the Internet and I saw a beautiful palomino that was injured and needed a home. But, they were hours from where we were. I said, “we have to save this horse, we have to go get her.” Louise and I drove all night to go get her and we got there at 7 a.m. That is where it all started, as we saved Chardonnay from slaughter when she was only 2 years old. We went from one horse to 140.

At want point did you know that you wanted to give up your previous career to work at the sanctuary full time?

I always had to be up really early feeding cats and dogs and still had to balance that with managing my employees. I really loved it and I worked hard because I knew I had to bring home more money for the animals. We decided that this is really a full time job. So, I decided to leave the corporate world and take care of the animals where my real passion is.

What are your plans for the future with the sanctuary?

The main goal is of course to provide a more spacious home for our horses. We are currently running a capital campaign to help us purchase a larger property. Nobody is cramped here to where they’re not comfortable, but we would love to have 20 acres of pasture instead of about 3 and a half acres of pastures. We want to give our animals the best life possible.
